A haunting debut novel where dreams, family and spirits collide
Mackenzie, a Cree millennial, wakes up in her one-bedroom Vancouver apartment clutching a pine bough she had been holding in her dream just moments earlier. When she blinks, it disappears. But she can still smell the sharp pine scent in the air, the nearest pine tree a thousand kilometers away in the far reaches of Treaty 8.
Mackenzie continues to accidentally bring back items from her dreams, dreams that are eerily similar to real memories of her older sister and Kokum before their untimely deaths. As Mackenzie’s life spirals into a living nightmare—crows are following her around and she’s getting texts from her dead sister on the other side—it becomes clear that these dreams have terrifying, real-life consequences. Desperate for help, Mackenzie returns to her mother, sister, cousin, and aunties in her small Alberta hometown. Together, they try to uncover what is haunting Mackenzie before something irrevocable happens to anyone else around her.
Haunting, fierce, an ode to female relations and the strength found in kinship, Bad Cree is a gripping, arresting debut by an unforgettable voice.

Story
There is one question Canadians have asked Jody Wilson-Raybould more than any other: What can I do to help advance reconciliation? This has been true from her time as a leader of British Columbia’s First Nations, as a Member of Parliament, as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, within business communities, and when having conversations with people. Whether speaking as individuals, communities, organizations, or governments, people want to take concrete and tangible action that will make real change. They just need to know how to get started, or to take the next step.

Story
Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading "with murderous attention", must solve the mystery of this haunting.

Story
When Will returns to Medicine River, he thinks he is simply attending his mother’s funeral. He doesn’t count on Harlen Bigbear and his unique brand of community planning. Harlen tries to sell Will on the idea of returning to Medicine River to open shop as the town’s only Native photographer. Somehow, that’s exactly what happens. Through Will’s gentle and humorous narrative, we come to know Medicine River, a small Albertan town bordering a Blackfoot reserve. And we meet its people: the basketball team; Louise Heavyman and her daughter, South Wing, and many more.

Story
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

Satisfying
Once I started the book I could not stop, I played it at work until I was finished. The part about kokum coming to her dreams at the end made me cry, I miss my kokum too, Thank you for the good read/listen. Hiy Hiy ❤️from Treaty 6 Territory.

Bone chilling from beginning to end!
This book was required text for my English college course. As somebody who hasn’t read horror in many years, I found this riveting bone, chilling, and I couldn’t put it down! I have the audiobook as well as the hardcopy! I am so grateful that this was required for my course. I recommend to everyone! Not only for a good scare, but for the story. For the story of McKenzies family and everything that they had been through.

A Modern Thriller You Will Enjoy
What first stood out to me was the inclusion of a Trans character whose pronouns were they/them. Otherwise, you have an all female cast of characters that will give you all the feels. The story is great and the performance is on point. Great choice from CBC Canada Reads 2024 | Dallas Soonias!

Chilling, moving, and healing. Complex Characters
Reminded me of my own grief that I set aside. The narrator enriched the story.

Well written but tough to get through!
I expected it to have difficult content but dang! This is one horror nightmare after another. It’s quite creepy which I didn’t expect. The narrator did a good job. Good lesson at the end of the book, but it was a lot to get there!

Fantastic book!
I'm not really a big horror fan, but this book was so good! it's sad and creepy and funny and tense and heartwarming and really covers grief and loss in such a well done way. I really enjoyed it and definitely reccomend! plus it's not a super long read and doesn't drag on needlessly, but still has a great and suspenseful/tense build up to the end.

Well crafted story
Fantastic story with lovable, complex characters. It’s moving, suspenseful and healing. A beautiful job narrating by Tanis Parenteau, really good distinction between all the different character, smooth, steady voice. Great listen, I highly recommend it.

A horror story with depth
I am normally not in to horror at all, and at times did find it very creepy. However, it was very compelling, and the deeper story of loss, and finding belonging, resonated strongly with me.
