Publisher's Summary

When Nigel Baxter, a middle-aged married banker with an unremarkable past, is found dead in the bath of a plush hotel suite, his wrists slit, it looks as if he's taken his own life. At first. But when Detective Inspector Daniel Riley is assigned to the case, he soon realises all isn't as it first appears to be. When a postmortem shows Baxter was poisoned, Riley suspects foul play. And then there's the odd addition of a teddy bear left at the crime scene....

Struggling to come to terms with the loss of his fiancée, Rachel, in a freak motorcycle accident and the baby she was carrying inside her, Riley throws himself into the case in a bid to distract himself from his grief. And his infamous intuition is telling him something is off, really off on this one. With the help of his dedicated team, Riley begins to delve into Baxter's life and soon realises that the amenable family man has been indulging in the 'services' of some dubious websites, ones where young women hook up with older men in return for 'favours', and there's one woman in particular he'd like to speak to. A woman calling herself Goldilocks....

Reliably good

This is my second book in the series and I can’t believe that they were included free with membership since both have been incredibly good. So much so that I’ll be seeking to read more by this author. Thank you Audible.

The narrator has the same accent as Matt Smith...

... so I kept picturing Matt Smith reading me the book. The story was OK. I don't as much like the slice of the genre in which you see too much into the killer's head, but I know that may appeal to others more than it does to me. I also thought there were a few parts that seemed overly repetitive. And an unfortunate pet peeve -- two characters with similar names. Rachel and Rebecca. It made a few bits confusing.

Overall though, I liked the main character and enjoyed the narrator, so regardless of the criticisms I will try the second book. If I like it a bit more I will continue, and if I don't I won't.

Terrific Read

Believably flawed protagonist and antagonist. I wasn’t sure whether this was an unreliable narrator or not.

Great from beginning to end

The first of Anna-Lou Weatherleys books I have read (listened to) and enjoyed every minute. Very interesting story. Definitely going to look for the next one of her books. 🤗

Loved it!!

Once I started with this audiobook I couldn't stop, it kept me engaged!
The story is very good, it has some subjects that could trigger some people, but the way the author touches them is with care. I liked the police character so much!
In my opinion, James Lailey does a magnificent job reading the book.

Good listen.

I did not like some off the subject matter, but the overall story was compelling. It showed the humanity of those who deviate from the norm. The main character, Daniel, was compassionate in his police life and struggled with grief and loss while still trying to lead a normal life. Relatable for many of us. I enjoyed the book and the voice actor. Will listen to the next one.

Entertaining detective romp. Very much nsfw and nsfchildren

I found it predictable but possibly because I have listened to so much of this genre. Excellent narration, which adds much to the rating of this. Main character is not overly likeable, which I appreciate! Sort of a standard sad-but-tough male detective trope but whatever, it’s a good work listen, especially because it’s free! NSFW AND NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN
