Publisher's Summary

For the past year, Chloe St. John has been working as a K-9 cop with her German shepherd partner, Hank. After being dumped by her fiance for another woman, Chloe has decided Hank is just about the only male she likes. She's over the whole romance thing and focuses her attention on doing her job because a serious case of human trafficking with connections to her missing cousin just landed in her lap.

When US Marshall Blake MacCallum's daughter goes missing, he's ordered to kill the judge he's protecting and tell no one about his daughter's disappearance or she will die. Blake races against the clock to rescue his daughter while Chloe and Hank are asked to be a part of the task force assembled to bring down the traffickers.

Chloe finds herself attracted to the silent, suffering man, but thanks to her previous bad judgment, she wonders if she can trust him. And can Blake trust himself around this firecracker of a woman?

Love the book, very poor editing almost ruined it!

A tough subject to tackle and one that is as truly heartwrenching as this one could have been very ugly but it was done with compassion and not a lot of gory detail which I appreciate.

I love listening to Lynette Eason's books, I think I have almost everything she has written and I will continue to buy them but PLEASE have someone work on the editing. It was truly painful to hear all of the stilted sentences. word ... break ... word word word ... break ... word ... break. I would have returned it but I did listen because it was a good story and I would feel guilty.
I really hope they re-edit so no one else has to listen like this, I even tried 1.25 and 1.5 but that didn't help. I stuck with 1.25 to finish. This must be an editing issue because I have listened to this narrator before and she is great!

Awkward transitions in flow

Awkward transition in flow of dialog when a person is being addressed: I.e. “Thanks......Mom.”

Great story and the rest of the performance is good: good inflection and appropriate emotional feeling.

Excellent and filled with suspense.

I usually have an audio book I can listen in the car when commuting to work, this one grabbed me and I couldn’t stop listening when I arrived home....so in less than 24 hrs I finished it and wasn’t disappointed. I can’t wait for the next one to be available.

Timeline inconsistency

On the same night the news that Penny is found and "is coming home", she shows up for ice cream. Its very unlikely that she comes home and is ready to go out in a couple of hours.
Besides that i enjoyed the book very much

Well written for a dark topic

I almost didn’t listen after the initial entry into sex trafficking. But it was handled well.
The reader has a staccato style that may assist clarity, but is distracting.

Excellent plot twists and turns

I love books that makes you think and can count on Lynette Eason to provide them. Called to Protect provides a small inside view to human trafficking and that makes me shudder. I think she tackled it well with the plot twists and turns; the strength of character of her female characters in her stories (some who think they totally lack strength) is skillfully done; the primary tenor of story dark and depressing, yet the attraction between Chloe and Blake brought brief spurts of light into it. The St John family ties the stories to each other but also brings a consistency to these stories that's reassuring to the reader/listener and something that I think that we'd all like to be a part of.
Highly recommend this book as I did book 1.
Would prefer the narrator be able to distinguish characters better with narration. Difficult add times to know who is talking.

Books like these are why I pay for Escape

This was a good mystery book that had me guessing until the end. Loved the canine inclusion, as well. It's books like these that keeps me as a subscriber to Audible Escape.

I really enjoyed this installment. I'm looking forward to reading about the rest of the St. Johns!
