Publisher's Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An epic adventure about a female athlete perhaps past her prime, brought back to the tennis court for one last grand slam” (Elle), from the author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Six, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

“The perfect novel to close out your summer.”—The Washington Post

“Gorgeous. The kind of sharp, smart, potent book you have to set aside every few pages just to catch your breath. I’ll take a piece of Carrie Soto forward with me in life and be a little better for it.”—Emily Henry, author of Book Lovers and Beach Read

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.

But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player named Nicki Chan.

At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked “the Battle-Axe” anyway. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.

In spite of it all, Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season. In this riveting and unforgettable novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet.

Another winner from Jenkins Reid!

Great audio performance, fantastic story. I don't know anything about tennis, but was enthralled nonetheless.

Another Stellar Read

TJR really knows how to capture her audience. I was hooked and even though I care little about Tennis, I was absolutely intrigued.

Not a tennis player

Totally loved Daisy Jones and the Six. I think the story was lost on me as I’m not a tennis player.

I loved the performances though.

Great story!

After reading Malibu Rising, I was interested in how TJR would humanize Carrie Soto. She did it. I loved the narration and story!

Know nothing of tennis

I’m not a sports person by any means but this story is gripping. The narrators are perfect and truly bring the characters to life.

Great Listen

I laugh at myself because I understand pretty much nothing about tennis. So, I learned something on this one. Mostly though - I LOVED the narration on this one. She was perfect - hard when she needed to be, vulnerable when it was called for, delicate when it made sense. Really well cast. Not my favourite book from Jenkins Reid, but reliably enjoyable. I never regret listening to her books. I love how so many of her characters from different books are woven into the fabric of each novel. Just a bit, not enough to roll your eyes, and just enough that IYKYK.

Fantastic Narration

A whole casts' worth of fantastic narrators. This in turn made me love the story more. I am not sure I would have liked the book as much had I read it though.

Obsessed

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this book as I much as I did. Such a beautiful story and listening to the audiobook while reading the physical copy at the same time was an unreal experience.

Not great, disappointing

I’m about a third of the way through and I’m really surprised by this book. I’m not sure if it’s the awkwardly overwritten story or the terrible narrators, but this is not the quality of TJR’s other books. I think the main narrator is the biggest part of the problem, but it sounds like the author did a lot of research and wants to make sure we know she knows the facts of the game. Not a terrible story, but not on par with Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones or Evelyn Hugo. Story really misses the amazing narration usually provided by Julia Whelan.

Save your time and watch ESPN

This was not a story… This was highlights from a tennis career. There was nothing endearing to me about any of the characters as there was no character development etc. I cared so little about this book that I listened to it at 2.0 speed and then finally gave up 3/4 of the way through.

Shallow character. Shallow story. Disappointed!

Every chapter is the same. Shallow character. Shallow story. The only thing TJR goes into depth on are all the tennis matches, which doesn’t help move the story along. Carrie is a “b$&@*” throughout the story. One note, which is the opposite of any woman with this temperament. The same issues she has with her father in the first chapter continues in EVERY chapter there after. The story doesn’t develop until about 80% of the way through. I was so disappointed. Loved Malibu Rising and 7 Husbands. This was a huge miss.

The attitude of the character - arrogant, rude, selfish, mean, angry woman. The audio version is a bit traumatizing to hear such hostility throughout the whole performance. I wanted her to lose every match.

Great narrating

I enjoyed this book, but I love and understand tennis. The whole time listening I was wondering if someone that doesn’t follow tennis would enjoy it. The book is fast moving, and the narrating was perfect. Love how the author brings characters from her other books.

Nothing Like Her Normal Style - Dry and Flat

I’m a huge fan of the author’s many other novels - she typically has a very creative and unique style that grabs you and makes you care about the characters and the story from the onset. This book is unfortunately a bland departure from what makes all of her others so enjoyable. The characters are one dimensional and boring, the story is flat and does nothing to engage the reader/listener. I had to stop listening after about 6 hours - there was no growth or development in the characters nor plot. All that transpired was page after page of a less than likable main character complaining and striving to be #1 and prove herself. Lengthy uninteresting descriptions of tennis match after tennis match and practice after practice. I felt like I had the tv turned onto the tennis channel for all the plot I got. The narrator and cast did a nice job but they just didn’t have much to work with unfortunately. Save your credit and read one of her many other wonderful books instead such as Daisy Jones & the Six or the 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Wow another masterpiece !

I have read every book that Taylor Jenkins Reid has ever written. I enjoy most of the books she has released And adore some of her earlier work as well but you can really see the progression and growth that she's had as a writer in her Last few book releases. It's so impressive the way she writes flawed characters. I love her pacing, charter development, and ability to create such an immersive Experience while reading her books. She is definitely going to go down as one of my favorite authors off all time. I will read anything this woman writes including her grocery list lol. I preordered this book 7 months before it came out no and had such high expectations and right before the book came out I thought to myself did I set this to high and my setting myself up for disappointed from how excited I've been but this book Is met up to everything I wanted it to be. I am truly impressed and so happy I was able to read her books. I own everything she's put out as a hard cover and a audible version And I don't regret a single purchase.

Best Read of the 2020s

Wow. Wow. Wow. I love everything about this book—storyline, character development, and the audio production. This is absolutely the best Fiction book I have read in years and I’m devastated that I’ve finished it. I related so much with Carrie’s character and
I felt every possible emotion. It’s a story that will leave a lasting impression and likely one
of very few books I can see myself reading again because it’s that good. Buy it, you won’t be disappointed!

Game, set, match

Taylor Jenkins Reid does it again. So well written, you do not need any tennis knowledge to love this book. The story telling is phenomenal, the reader fells like they are traveling and training along with Carrie. The shout outs to Reid’s other titles was a special treat. The narration kept me engaged to the point that I finished the entire book today. Julia Whelan’s familiar voice is also a plus. Cannot wait until Reid’s next one.

I don't even like tennis

This was not her most compelling work to me personally but her ability to draw me in regardless of how little appreciation I have for Tennis is a real talent that she has already shown in her other books. She can use any subject, brand it in her initials and give the reader an easy, comprehensive, good time.
