About this listen
Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last!
But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a house. Inside, James meets a bunch of oversized friends - Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug, and more. With a snip of the stem, the peach starts rolling away, and the great adventure begins!

What the critics say
"Rich in humor, acutely observant, Dahl lets his imagination rip in fairyland." (The New York Times)
“Roald Dahl sometimes shared a tonal kinship with Ogden Nash, and he could demonstrate a verbal inventiveness nearly Seussian...[His] stories work better in audio than in print.” (The New York Times)

Classic story, but with a few issues
Production: inconsistent audio levels (narration was really good, but volume was either too quiet or too loud, so we had to keep adjusting the volume)
Story: A classic, but with some parts that don’t age well.

Real enthusiasm - - but a little fast for kids.
The reader is really good at setting the scene and being enthusiastic, however I teach grade 4 and the speed of his reading is a little fast for them.
Slowing the pace 1 or 2 notches would be really great.

Worth the Listen
I wasn't sure if I would bother listening to the Audible. It was on my wishlist for some time because of the good ratings. I like the movies, especially the original. I saw it so many times in my childhood but I still wasn't sure if I wanted to hear a book version.
Here is the thing, the book was really interesting. I truly enjoyed it. If I were just reading it I would think it's great. The narrator , however, makes this from a good read to one I'm reccomending. The narrator is amazing.
He's just one of those rare narrators that is just made for this story. I may see what other books he's done.
Give it a chance. I promise, you'll love it....but if not....Audible is great with returns.
I wanted to give the story 5 stars because it deserves it....but the narrator I'd give 6 if I could.
