As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. True bravery
A touching story about wartime resistance in Europe to the Germany Nazi regime. Although fiction it is based on true war time heroism by the many civilians who helped to save innocent people who were being imprisoned, mistreated and murdered. Hero’s everyone them!!

Such a disappointment.
This was so bad, that I could not finish. So bad, that I’ve taken Jenoff’s other books off my TBR list. It was so bad, it left me in turns, crying, laughing (with incredulity) and shaking my head despondently. This was LAZY writing. The story is so disjointed, and the situations so incredibly unbelievable, that it just is impossible for me to go on. You need an example? Where should I start? A character who steals her cousin’s ID, and loses it. That cousin is then arrested, and by Devine perception knows who stole her ID. The cousin is placed at a transit camp, and lo and behold, her husband and son join her, and they’re able to live as a family within the camp. The cousin is then, miraculously able to get a message out to her thieving relative, who comes to visit her at the camp… not through the “visitor’s center” as those did not exist, but apparently walked up to the fence to chat and pass food over. Like really?? No. I can’t. I’m sorry I wasted my money on this drivel.

Meh
This wasn’t the worst book I’ve read or listened to, but it wasn’t great. I teach creative writing, and one of the things I say often is “show, don’t tell.” This author fails at that. I also say they must leave breadcrumbs for a twist ending, so it makes sense when the reader looks back. This reads like a first draft, where the author is filling in things as she goes. She doesn’t set things up early, so there is too much “telling” along the way because things that should be self-evident are not. I don’t think I would have finished if it weren’t audio on a long drive in which I did t have a strong enough signal to download a new one. There are so many better books out there waiting to be read

The story was ok. I felt the author repeated herself too much. It was bothersome. The narration was also ok. I think I was bothered because I felt it was repetitive so that took away from the performance.

surprised the author isn't more well known
Maybe it's just me and I don't know better but I have really enjoyed Jenoff's books and it seems she should be much more popular. I have listened to all her books and really empathize with the characters which are mostly young people, Jews for hte most part, making their way through World War II as best they can.
There have usually been Polish elements to her books and while this one is set mostly in Belgium there are some Polish references.
I suppose the author will continue writing her books and I will continue looking forward to them.

I loved 'Code Name Sapphire'. This was a very well written story. The characters were really well developed. Pam made me feel like I was living in the time. I felt like I could reach out and touch the characters. The ending had a good twist but was expected. The narrator did a really good job. I recommend for anyone into historical fiction.

Good storyline but characters make odd choices
Character dialogue gets tedious. The story is good but the conclusion makes you question the intelligence of the characters. So many bad choices which challenges the storyline. Perhaps it was a little over done, but the main story of the train line was good.
