Publisher's Summary

An Ember in the Ashes meets Three Dark Crowns in this lush debut fantasy novel about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to join a secret group of warriors who ride phoenixes into battle.

I had a sister once....

In a world ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders - legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire - until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart.

I promised her the throne would not come between us.

Sixteen years later, Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of old. After a shocking betrayal from her controlling sister, Veronyka strikes out alone to find the Riders - even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks.

But it is a fact of life that one must kill or be killed. Rule or be ruled.

Just as Veronyka finally feels like she belongs, her sister turns up and reveals a tangled web of lies between them that will change everything. And meanwhile, the new empire has learned of the Riders’ return and intends to destroy them once and for all.

Sometimes the title of queen is given. Sometimes it must be taken.

Crown of Feathers is an epic fantasy about love’s incredible power to save - or to destroy. Interspersed throughout is the story of Avalkyra Ashfire, the last Rider queen, who would rather see her empire burn than fall into her sister’s hands.

Great story

So far, this is the best fantasy genre that I have listened to. The plot and the characters are great. Because the story is very entertaining, I finished listening to it in one day.

fantastic read

Wasn't sure about multiple readers, but it ended up really distinguishing the characters voices. Loved the idea of Phoenix riders, truly unique story.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book

I was completely absorbed in this book. I love the world, but the strong female characters make it relatable. They are realistic, deep and fully defined. In the past 30 years the increase in female authors has resulted in believable female characters. Charlotte Gilman Perkins seems to me to have started the strong female characters with the Herland trilogy. I read that series many years ago and recognized how different female characters are when written by women.

The performances in this audiobook are delectable and truly bring the world to life.

Now, enough writing. I need to start the next book in this series!

Hook by the first chapter

Loved the story. Main character is very likeable. Lots of twists and turns, that made it hard to put it down.
I'm impatiently awaiting the squeal....please tell me there's a next book?

Slow to Start but worth sticking it out

At first I had a hard time follow this book, it was slow, confusing and I wasn't engaged, I even considered returning it. the switching back and forth of plots at first makes it hard to follow as do the snippets of quotes from other voice actors. However this book is worth sticking out, By the end I was totally enthralled and understood the authors desire to follow two separate characters. rich history the author paints for you through the story isn't all for nothing as some books are creating vast histories with no connection for the immediate story, however this book takes its vast history of the magical fictional world and makes it important and relevant. Narration was enjoyable as well.
