Publisher's Summary

The instant New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestseller!

In his New York Times bestselling book Courage is Calling, author Ryan Holiday made the Stoic case for a bold and brave life. In this much-anticipated second book of his Stoic Virtue series, Holiday celebrates the awesome power of self-discipline and those who have seized it.

To master anything, one must first master themselves–one’s emotions, one’s thoughts, one’s actions. Eisenhower famously said that freedom is really the opportunity to practice self-discipline. Cicero called the virtue of temperance the polish of life. Without boundaries and restraint, we risk not only failing to meet our full potential and jeopardizing what we have achieved, but we ensure misery and shame. In a world of temptation and excess, this ancient idea is more urgent than ever.

In Discipline is Destiny, Holiday draws on the stories of historical figures we can emulate as pillars of self-discipline, including Lou Gehrig, Queen Elizabeth II, boxer Floyd Patterson, Marcus Aurelius and writer Toni Morrison, as well as the cautionary tales of Napoleon, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Babe Ruth. Through these engaging examples, Holiday teaches listeners the power of self-discipline and balance, and cautions against the perils of extravagance and hedonism.

At the heart of Stoicism are four simple virtues: courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom. Everything else, the Stoics believed, flows from them. Discipline is Destiny will guide listeners down the path to self-mastery, upon which all the other virtues depend. Discipline is predictive. You cannot succeed without it. And if you lose it, you cannot help but bring yourself failure and unhappiness.

Awesome

I love just about anything I've read, heard or seen of Ryan Holiday. This book is no exception. I do imagine an update to some of the content will happen. He himself mentioned this regarding the passing of Queen Elizabeth. I struggled with the mentioning of Tom Brady. That hasn't aged well unfortunately. Don't let that stop you though. Wise words shared by a wise young man.

Your story

These ideas shouldn’t shake you to your core. I feel like critics of this genre of books feel they should close the book at the end and have cried, laughed, and orgasmed. Stoicism and authors like Ryan aren’t here to give you the secret sauce, YOU are the secret sauce. You make the decisions, micro and macro, these books are to help YOU make your life worth living.
Excellent as always Ryan, thank you for all you do. Love to see you grow and explore as an author.

The best Ryan Holiday book I've read.

A beautiful masterpiece that walks us through the lives of people who made discipline their destiny to positively impact our world. Because destiny is not easy, or it wouldn't be rewarding

Well Written, Well Spoken. Great Book

"Discipline is Destiny: How to Build Habits That Will Last a Lifetime" by Ryan Holiday is a practical guide to developing self-discipline and creating lasting habits. Drawing on ancient philosophy and modern psychology, Holiday offers a comprehensive approach to building discipline and achieving long-term success.

The book is organized into short chapters that focus on different aspects of discipline and habit-building, from setting goals and developing routines to overcoming obstacles and maintaining motivation. Holiday provides clear explanations of complex concepts, and his writing style is engaging and accessible.

One of the strengths of the book is Holiday's emphasis on the importance of self-awareness and self-reflection in building discipline. He argues that true discipline is not simply a matter of willpower, but is rooted in an understanding of one's values and priorities.

Another strength of the book is Holiday's use of real-life examples and anecdotes to illustrate his points. He draws on the experiences of successful athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists to demonstrate the power of discipline and the importance of habits in achieving success.

However, some readers may find the book overly focused on theory, and may crave more specific advice on how to develop discipline and habits in their own lives. Additionally, some of the advice may be familiar to readers who are already familiar with the self-help genre.

Overall, "Discipline is Destiny" is a thoughtful and practical guide to developing self-discipline and creating lasting habits. While it may not offer groundbreaking advice, it provides a comprehensive approach to building discipline that is rooted in both ancient wisdom and modern science.

Yet another masterpiece from our generation’s Marcus Aurelius

Each time I start a Ryan Holiday book I am challenged by the intense self reflection he entices and the extensive new (and not so new) information he teaches. But pushing through will take you on a ride you’ll never forget and will want to hear (or read) again and again. 10/10

Inspired,

I found the reading smooth and easy to visualize many if not all of the examples provided. An excellent example of what simple discipline can do for a person when applied. I’d recommend this to anyone who’s looking for a method to limit their exposure to chaos and optimize their daily routine.
