Story
He's tried to ignore them for too long. But the long-simmering conflict between Montana's holding at Coggeshall and the Night Goblins who also occupy the valley is about to boil over. Usually, goblins aren't anything to write home about: an enemy without much size, intellect, or weaponry. But these goblins? Well, that's just not the case. These are goblins with limitless resources, never-before-seen tactics, and horrifying monsters at their disposal. Worst of all, they don't fear death in the slightest. They just might force a good guy to become what he has always struggled to defeat.

Story
We join Montana, recently returned from an impromptu study abroad trip, a bit wiser, a bit broader in perspective, and a lot freaked out by the once-dead person who's currently in his bedroom. Possible zombie sightings aside, he's finally ready to take his job as Duke seriously. And just in time too - not only are the politics of the capital rapidly closing in on Montana's little valley holding, but there are also goblins to negotiate with. Plus, that cult threatening to take the lives of his citizens.

Straight out of the West (or, you know, somewhere through a gloom portal), in a thunder of hooves (but they're kinda like giant turtle hooves, if you can picture it?), comes Montana Coggeshall, gun (sword) slinger. Sure, he's survived Fiends' Night and an all-out goblin war. But for his people in Coggeshall to truly be safe, Montana needs to go out and find the source of all these crazy attacks.

Story
Montana Coggeshall is feeling the squeeze - and not just because of his new leather pants from the goddess Eona. His little safeholding in the ruthless world of Vuldranni is under siege. On both sides. At the front is Lord Caticorix, a grade-A Imperial flunkey if there ever was one. He's clearly ridiculous, but the army he brought with him might not be. Plus they're bent on blocking Coggeshall from getting any food or supplies from the outside world.

As usual, Montana Coggeshall is hell-bent on doing what's right, even if what's right isn't exactly what's wise. So he embarks on a quest to vanquish the corrupted ursus, a threat so large they could destroy the entire world of iNcarn8. Does Montana head out after months of training for cold weather conditions, amassing an army, and strategizing with his top aides? Not really. It's more like he just walks out of his holding one day with a guide and the members of his hirð. They're just a bunch of angry teddy bears, right?

But the big city is calling, and in order to succeed there, Montana must actually prove himself a deserving duke. If Glaton finds him lacking, Coggeshall could be forced into even further isolation. But if Glaton falls in love with him, the regular guy from Motor City could end up with limitless power, in charge of it all. And just like that, the fate of the entire Empire is in Montana's hands.

Clyde Hatchett has known he's had a corpse-king inside him, slowly trying to take over his body and raise an army of undead for a while now. And while that may seem like a rather, um, urgent matter to attend to, it's only now, after being forced out of Glaton by his best friends and then having to rescue someone's sister from a bad marriage, that he's actually in a place to deal with it. And he better deal with it quickly, since his entire left hand is starting to look like it belongs to the Crypt-Keeper.

It certainly doesn't feel like that to Clyde, who's still got a day job scraping mud (at least he hopes it's mud) out of monster pits. Good story but ...

Publisher's Summary
An endless night, full of hungry shadows.
The most dangerous night of the year is upon Coggeshall. Fiends' Night, when the boundary between Vuldranni and hell is the weakest.
And so hell comes out to play.
To survive the night, Montana must put his entire holding on lockdown and turn hastily made cave apartments into an actual, inviting home for thousands of Coggeshall residents. Most of whom don't really know or like each other. And all of whom have different ideas of what needs to be done on Fiends' Night.
So, intent on becoming the duke his people deserve, Montana spends the night flitting about Imperial balls, handing out gifts to children, squeezing through kobold tunnels, and building with the dwarves. It's his hand-shaking, baby-kissing time to shine.
Oh, except that The Master he just took care of in Osterstadt? That was the wrong one.
The real Master is hiding in Coggeshall, and Montana has to catch him before the entire holding becomes his dinner.

Too frustrating to enjoy.
I enjoyed this series for a long time. The writing is of a much higher quality than most others in the genre. That said, I can not give this higher than 3 stars for a few reasons.
One, to say the plot inches forward is generous, but to say it nanometers forward sounds weird, so, the plot inches forward. I feel like I am being milked for my credit.
Two, it's called a story arc not a story incline. The story doesn't wind down, wrap up, or give any sense of completion. It just ends, right at the top of the arc. That might work for TV shows where the next episode is a week away but, despite Ugland's truly commendable publishing frequency, it's never going to be fast enough to be anything but frustrating, I don't want to end a book frustrated.
Last (and also least), I enjoy the snarky banter in these books, it's great, and it is one of the defining characteristics of the series. But sometimes it feels like too much of a good thing. Nearly every character is snarky, it starts to take away at some point. But, then again, maybe it wouldn't be a Ugland book without all the snark so, grain of salt.
I'll give it one more book, but after that idk.

I just can’t any more.
The main character is deliberately stupid. It started off funny, stayed tolerable for a while, but it’s become pretty annoying. If he was just bad at social interaction, that would be fine. If he was just incapable of basic planning, I could deal with that. I could even read a book about an idiotic Uber warrior wandering the world by himself and smashing his way out of trouble. What I can’t deal with is the way that almost every choice is the exact wrong one.
If you blindfolded a monkey and had it throw darts at a wall with yes/no painted on it, the monkey would make better decisions.
There is just no growth or character progression. Either he learns something or he stops being in charge. Either one would revive the series. I’m done for now. Maybe I’ll try to read this again in a few years when I’m no longer as annoyed.

Where’s the rest?
The previous book, this one and at this rate probably the next 2 could all be combined into one good book. I’ve listened to this series twice and enjoyed it both times but this book left me wondering if anything was going to get accomplished until the last 3 chapters then a hurry to the end.

After all 10 books...
So I waited until the tenth book was finished before I wrote a review. Start at the first book, get this far. I am now in a depression because I found this series while it is still being manifested. Don't think about getting it, just do it! This is now one of my top 3 series in all of literature. One of my new favorite writers. and 1 hell of a good time. Now, I start the bad guys series...

So very little Progression... Come on !
This installment of the series was very lacking. A lot of the dog chasing it's tail, then the last 30mins felt bumbled together and we get cliffhanger where none is needed... Or I should say the publishers decided an extra book could be made from what would normally be a complete story. Credits aren't cheap and I haven't been feeling like I'm getting a full book lately.
