Story
From the acclaimed author of Her Every Fear and The Kind Worth Killing comes a diabolically clever tale of obsession, revenge, and cold-blooded murder - a sly and brilliant guessing game of a novel. Harry Ackerson has always considered his stepmother, Alice, to be sexy and beautiful in an "otherworldly" way. She has always been kind and attentive, if a little aloof in the last few years. Days before his college graduation, Alice calls with shocking news. His father is dead, and the police think it's suicide.

Story
Hen and her husband, Lloyd, have settled into a quiet life in a new house outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Hen (short for Henrietta) is an illustrator and works out of a studio nearby and has found the right meds to control her bipolar disorder. Finally, she’s found some stability and peace. But when they meet the neighbors next door, that calm begins to erode as she spots a familiar object displayed on the husband’s office shelf. The sports trophy looks exactly like one that went missing from the home of a young man who was killed two years ago.

Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack - which he titled "Eight Perfect Murders". But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller.

Publisher's Summary
A bride's dream honeymoon becomes a nightmare when a man with whom she's had a regrettable one-night stand shows up in this electrifying psychological thriller from the acclaimed author of Eight Perfect Murders.
Abigail Baskin never thought she'd fall in love with a millionaire. Then she met Bruce Lamb. He's a good guy, stable, level-headed, kind—a refreshing twist from her previous relationships.
But right before the wedding, Abigail has a moment of uncertainty. The drunken one-night stand from her bachelorette weekend, the sexy guy who wouldn't give her his real name, didn't really mean anything, she keeps telling herself. She puts the incident out of her mind, and now believes she wants to be with Bruce for the rest of her life. Their honeymoon on a luxurious, secluded island in Maine will be the beginning of their blissful lives together.
Then the mysterious stranger suddenly appears—and Abigail's future life and happiness are turned upside down. He insists that their passionate night was the beginning of something much, much more. Something special. Something real—and he's tracked her down to prove it.
Does she tell Bruce and ruin their idyllic honeymoon—and possibly their marriage? Or should she handle this psychopathic stalker on her own? To make the situation worse, strange things begin to happen. She sees a terrified woman in the night shadows, and no one at the resort seems to believe anything is amiss . . . including her perfect new husband.

Nope
The only excitement this one had was watching then ending of the book approaching. I read wonderful things about Peter Swanson and ordered the book. I listened and after a few hours felt it was only one chapter from being exciting. I groaned with every “he said” “she said” I’ll give him another book chance but I was not happy with any of the story theme

Agony!
I've listened to two other books by Mr. Swanson and liked both. This book, however, dragged and had characters acting in unrealistic ways. There were far too many so and so "said" instead of using other dialogue descriptors. The narrator irked me - I couldn't decipher any of the male characters from one another and it was almost as bad for the female characters. I'm also wondering if all of Mr. Swanson's novels involve cheating woman as all three of the ones I've listened to so far do and it's getting a bit boring.

Slow start.
The narrator did a pretty good job. The story line was very slow at the beginning and I was unsure if I had started a romance novel. It was fairly predictable with a few short spots of intrigue. Not a favourite but passed the time well.

No, no, no.
I don’t usually feel strongly enough to write a poor review, but I just have to say - the main character - women just don’t think like that! I’m not saying women don’t fall for creeps, but the inner monologue was so naive and ridiculous, it was obvious the book was NOT written by a woman. Also, the actual story doesn’t begin until there’s only 3 hours left of the novel. Overall, I’m glad it’s done. The narration was awesome, the story just didn’t do it for me .

Oh Peter....not your best effort!
This story sounds like something completed in a weekend. It didn't have the twists, turns or surprises I've come to love from Peter Swanson. The female narrator is good but the male voices are laughable. The story comes with poor description. How many times do we need to hear about white shirts and khakis? I LOVED 8 Perfect Murders and look forward to listening to Peters next novel.....hopefully it will be reminiscent of that book. I'm truly sorry that I was so disappointed with this one.

Enjoyable but very predictable
Love Peter Swanson's writing style, he is one of my favorite authors. But this story is quite different than his previous works. It reads more like a horror story, a good one. But it doesn't have twists per say, or much mystery, or delving deep into psychological realms of the characters. I was fairly disappointed by the lack of all these. I think that it would have been much interesting if we could also read the husband's point of view. This could have add a much more menacing vibe to this tale.

Did Peter Swanson really write this?
I am a huge Peter Swanson fan and loved all of his previous work. This book was disappointing to me because it didn’t seem like his usual style. The beginning was long and drawn out, the scenery was not as easy to picture as it normally is (ie: when he describes places in Maine or Boston I can visualize it very well) and the story was just not that interesting in my opinion. Hopefully his next book will be awesome.

No surprises and a little disappointing...
Swanson
I got hooked on Peter Swanson with his book The Kind Worth Killing. I don’t think he’s written anything so good since. This book is entertaining but still not as good. He set the bar so high I don’t know if he can ever attain that level again.
Back to this book. As I said, the story is entertaining. The topic is not a new one. Secrets to hide, a lodge located on a private island miles from the mainland. Completely cut off from civilization because there is no WiFi or phone service. The only landlines are kept in a locked office. If this sounds slightly predictable to you, you would be correct ! I’ve listened to quite a few books with this basic template. The names may change as well as the location but the outcome remains the same.

Thank You.

Misogynistic Fantasy
Tom Nolan (WSJ) recommended this book so I pre-ordered and I was looking forward to listening on an upcoming car trip.
Shortly after it began, I had to go back to confirm that it had to be a male author. The main character is just too stupid for words, and the entire “mystery” hinges on the fact that she is basically a vapid weakling who allows herself to be gaslighted by one dominant male character after another.
The “resort” is entirely implausible, and again a man’s fantasy of power over women.
The narrator does a good enough job, but considering the high percentage of male characters to females and that doing male voices does not seem to be her strong suit, may not have been the best choice for this book.
If you’re a fan of rip-the-bodice romance novels of male domination this is the book for you. Otherwise, save your money.

I’m Not Sure What I Just Read...?
We all have a handful of them—writers like Peter Swanson. We’ve read all their books, and mostly we’ve enjoyed them. In my case, Peter Swanson even surprised me with one book I thought was a terrific, suspenseful, even original, modern crime drama (see “Before She Knew Him”). Mostly though, I read Peter Swanson’s books because they’re entertaining, usually have at least a minor twist, and provide an enjoyable afternoon of easy listening.
Let me insert here that Peter Swanson stands out from his peers in a BIG way when it comes to premise. I nearly always walk away wondering how an author with such promising ideas upon which to construct a solid mystery could only scratch the surface? Couldn’t he go deeper? Forget the worn-out, overused creepy neighbor or train stalker storylines. Mr. Swanson has some great plot ideas. He just doesn’t often do much with them.
And now we arrive at “Every Vow You Break”. If I didn’t recognize the lead female character as being straight from the Swanson mold, I might question whether he actually wrote this. I don’t even know if the most devoted Swanson fan would think this worth reading. Not only is the book ridiculous, but it is also boring.
Bottom line: Whatever this book is supposed to be, skip it. You aren’t missing anything.

Super dark, good narration
This book is super dark. It’s pretty much what you think as you get into the story but then it gets worse. It really catches the mentality of white privilege males that are extremely fragile when it comes to woman. This is not a book I could listen to again, I suggest getting it from the library before using a credit on this.
I hope this isn’t the authors fantasy but he sure makes his female characters dumb so I don’t think he likes them much.

That Was a Fun Psychological Thriller!
NO SPOILERS! It’s now 3:46 AM and I just finished the book. Normally I fall to sleep listening to books but this one kept me wide awake!!!
This story really builds and builds with layers of paranoia and dread. Then the last 2 hours were a legit and satisfying nail biter! I recommend this to anyone who likes psychological thrillers. I wish I had paced myself, it’s over too soon.

this book moves very slow. I fell asleep several times and was still able to figure out what was going on without rewinding. I was very disappointed because I normally like this author.

Wow!
This book surprised me. I was half way through and thought I knew what was happening but then it just kept twisting and turning. I couldn't stop listening to to this book. I really enjoyed suspense, especially in the second half of the story.
