“Lapena is a master of manipulation.” —USA Today

Welcome to Stanhope. A safe neighborhood. A place for families.

William Wooler is a family man, on the surface. But he’s been having an affair, an affair that ended horribly this afternoon at a motel up the road. So when he returns to his house, devastated and angry, to find his difficult nine-year-old daughter, Avery, unexpectedly home from school, William loses his temper.

Hours later, Avery’s family declares her missing.

Suddenly Stanhope doesn’t feel so safe. And William isn’t the only one on his street who’s hiding a lie. As witnesses come forward with information that may or may not be true, Avery's neighbors become increasingly unhinged.

Who took Avery Wooler?

I couldn’t stop listening to it ! The story is really captivating and the narrator is among the best. This book might be adapted for a movie. I enjoyed this novel a lot. Worth a credit for sure.

Amazing !

This is an easy thriller listen. Like other reviewers, I found the ending far too thin. It was a let down for sure

Lots to like

At the beginning of this book I felt like I had read it before. I kept thinking of different things that could have happened because it was similar to other books.

The actual plot was, unfortunately, a massive let down. I found every character to be grossly unlikable. The way this 9 year old behaved / was talked about by her family / was made to be a psychopath just didn’t sit well and felt really unrealistic.

The fact that the father was abusive and admitted to “losing his temper” and slapping her (not just once!) but this wasn’t ever called abuse or an issue for anyone (beyond superficially, really) was concerning to me. The fact that the mistress’ husband got a little homicidal just to be like ok just joking was more than strange. The 9 year olds mom across the street wishes she died. It just felt super depressing and like everyone was mentally unstable in a forced way.

Great narration!!

Everyone here is… a bit insufferable

Good quick binge listen, but the story is a bit flat and unbelievable. It’s read nicely though.
