Publisher's Summary

He saw what you did.

He knows who you are....

From the New York Times best-selling author of Pieces of Her and The Silent Wife, an electrifying stand-alone thriller.

An ordinary life...

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be.

...hides a devastating past...

But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

...but now the past is catching up...

Then a case lands on her desk - defending a wealthy man accused of rape. It’s the highest profile case she’s ever been given - a case that could transform her career, if she wins. But when she meets the accused, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s chosen her as his attorney. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he knows what happened 20 years ago and why Leigh has spent two decades running.

...and time is running out.

If she can’t get him acquitted, she’ll lose much more than the case. The only person who can help her is her estranged younger sister Callie, the last person Leigh would ever want to ask for help. But suddenly she has no choice....

Entertaining

As always, I enjoy Karin Slaughter’s books and Kathleen Early’s narration.

As with several other books I have listened to by this author, there is one or more section of the book that is repeated. Generally, 1-3 paragraphs. I have found this in most of Karin’s books so I would say whomever is editing needs to pay closer attention. No, it is not that I have stopped listening and backtracked a bit.

The only other thing I want to point out that was a huge bone of contention for me was the pronunciation of the name Calliope. It is not Calli Ope as Kathleen pronounced it throughout the reading, but Cal Eye O Pee.

I read these books to get away. Not to relive covi

I have read almost every Karin Slaughter book. Needless to say I am a fan.

This book starts out in a different vein than her normal books. Firstly, the characters are very difficult to like. But the most difficult and disruptive thing, is the constant undercurrent of covid-19. It's really just too much. I did read the authors rational as to including covid, but honestly, it ruined the entire book for me. I read to get away from the stressors of daily life. I read to relax and unwind. The constant reintroduction of the hell we are living through did not allow me to get away, to relax. I think it was a HUGE error on the part of the Author.

As the book moved forward, the characters did not become more likeable, however, I could understand where they were coming from. I know that this is a stand-alone book, and for that, I am grateful.

The twists and turns are exactly what you expect and thrive on from Ms. Slaughter. Really, this is the only redeeming quality except for the wonderful reading of this book.

I would recommend this book to die hard Slaughter fans, only to have the chance to see her work from a different perspective, however, if you do not know this author, start with another one of her books for an excellent read. This one just isn't it!

So disappointed

I’m a big fan of Karin Slaughters books and was super excited to dive into this…only to be left completely disappointed.

Including Covid into this book was so unnecessary. I found myself more and more irritated with every mention of masks & hand sanitizer and vaccination peppered throughout the story. I’m 5 chapters in and don’t know if I’ll continue.

Listen to it over two days

I have always been A big fan of Karen slaughter.
I enjoyed the Will Trent books & the Grant County.
And I’ve always wanted her to make more of those Series. I have enjoyed the book sense, but this one was the one that makes me want to relisten two her series from the beginning. 🤞🏼 someone makes a movie out of her books because they’re so good, and I would love to see how it translate.

Fantastic Read

This audible was the best of all Karin Slaughter’s books. I’ve read all the Will Trent books and enjoyed them to various degrees but this book was several levels above those. Kathleen Early is one of the best narrators around.

Spare me the propaganda

This was an awful book. I enjoy crime/mystery type novels and give Karin Slaughter a shot here. First and only book from her.

A ridiculous covid19 narrative with a murder mystery in the mix. How many times did I notice masking references......hard to say but there were plenty. Most hilarious was that a strung out junkie cares about a virus while polluting her own body with any drug she can find and is concerned about non-mask wearers. Lame.

Now onto the rampant Misandry, of that there is plenty as well. Under the guise of being victims of Misogyny of course. This book has it. Devout hatred for men (especially the "pale" ones)
Shots at white privilege occur a few times throughout.

Anyhow, I will not be supporting Karin's work further. I read/listen to audiobooks to escape the real world. She brings the garbage of society to you.

P.S-I do not recommend and The ending author's note could be a comedy skit 🤣

Loved it!

Absolutely loved this book from beginning to end. I’m a huge Karin Slaughter fan and this book didn’t disappoint. I also am very particular about the Narrator and always looking for Kathleen Early. Her voice is fantastic and pulls you right into the story.

One of the best novels ive ever read!

This book was one of the most wonderful books ive ever read. The writing made me feel as though i was there in many moments experiencing it first hand! The characters were so well developed and you cannot help but truly feel connected to them! By the end i was brought to tears and have already told multiple people they MUST read this book! 10/10 Karen Slaughter did a magnificent job with this and i look forward to reading many more of her works!
