A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

Excellent

what an excellent read. Really opens your eyes to narcissistic and abusive parents. I can relate sadly to my own mother. I'm glad Jeanette is doing well now.❤️

Vulnerable, Honest and Concise

This book was the first in a while that I was able to listen to without breaks. I truly appreciated Jennette’s story, and it is a stark reminder that fame and fortune doesn’t always equate to happiness.

“iCarly” and “Sam & Cat” were just shy of my time, but I can only imagine the spread of issues that are caused and the impact those have long term on all those forced into the spotlight.

I also commend the bravery it took to put this anecdote out in to the world, even mentioning the financial gain the author could have gained by not divulging the intimate details. I can only wish that this memoir is a resounding success, and McCurdy gains more from this than she would have had she kept quiet.

As a person who also had a parent who was overbearing and demanded perfection, this book really hit close to home for me and reminded me that my childhood experience was not alien. Thank you for writing this, it’s going to touch so many lives.

amazingly written and voiced

had me hooked the whole way through, a glimpse into the world of Hollywood and the lengths some people will go to live their dreams through the kid no matter how much it may harm they putting onto their own child, hard to listen to some parts but for good reason heavy topics that have been swept under the rug for so long slowly coming out and it's very sad to see the outcome which has affected so much of Jennette McCurdys life as she's brought so much joy to people for years I do hope she gets it in return and will recommend this book.

The only Reason I have Audible

I love this quirky, extremely real take on Jennette’s life. It is so relatable in a lot of ways and baffling in others. 100% worth the read/listen.

Couldn’t stop listening.

I grew up watching Jennette on TV and she sheds light for many people who have experienced narcissistic abuse. It was wonderfully narrated, and she captivatingly intertwines punches of humour throughout the book.

Highly recommend

Very poignant and raw. She didn't sugar coat events and seemed to recount them as matter of fact as she could recall them. Even through the pain and unease of many of these, she was witty and could even make light or reduce the tension with her descriptions of people and places and her state at any given time. I'd also heard that people had an issue with the title. No. It's perfect.
