About this listen

Anthony Award-winning author William Kent Krueger crafts this riveting tale about a small Minnesota town’s ex-sheriff who is having trouble retiring his badge. Cork O’Connor loses his job after being blamed for a tragedy on the local Anishinaabe Indian reservation. But he must set aside his personal demons when a young boy goes missing on the same day a judge commits suicide—and no one but O’Connor suspects foul play.

What the critics say

"Krueger makes Cork a real person beneath his genre garments, mostly by showing him dealing with the needs of his two very different teenage daughters. And the author's deft eye for the details of everyday life brings the town and its peculiar problems to vivid life." ( Publishers Weekly)

Enjoyable Crime-Thriller

'Corcoran "Cork" O'Connor', a Chicago-trained cop, disgraced one-time small-town Minnesota Sheriff (now restaurateur), and part Anishinaabe-Ojibwe father of three is an interesting character. William Kent Krueger builds a mystery around an überethical modern man struggling with traditional-native beliefs (like the 'Wendigo', for example).. fashioning a story about a missing child from the local Indian Reservation and the murder of a politically-ambitious unscrupulous local Judge.
The emotional relationship/fatherhood struggles in Cork's personal life are overdramatic and events like gunfights are awkwardly timed, but the author's vocabulary, prose, and plotting are creditable.

Disappointingly, reader David Chandler turns in an unremarkable performance. Don't get me wrong, Chandler is solidly professional - notwithstanding an "I am reading a text sitting open on my lap" indifference at times. Overall, there is nothing particular in the narration that Recorded Books Inc. couldn't have gotten from another reader.

Altogether, 'Iron Lake' merits 7 out of 10 stars. I am pleased to have found it on the 'Plus' menu, but you could do better with your Credit when it leaves the "included with your subscription" catalog.

Love the story. The narrator took a little bit to get used to but adapted and enjoyed it.

IronLaje

Excellent story and narration. Enjoyed the native culture profiled in the book. Could have done with fewer deaths.

FABULOUS

Althought I have heard Krueger's books before, I had forgotten what an incredible writer William Kenf Krueger was! Every sentence is perfect, description is first rate, characters are well drawn. the narrator is wonderful. Excellent first book to this series and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of them. Look for all of Krueger's books, you will not be disappointed.

Love this Author

I was already hooked on William Kent Kreuger after reading "This Tender Land" & "Ordinary Grace". I decided to give his Cork O'Connor series a try and started of course with Book 1. Just downloading Book 2. Narrator is great, which also adds to the story. I really enjoy this author's style of storytelling and character development. I would highly recommend!
