Strength comes not in victories. It comes from standing up after defeats, in reaching out a hand and pulling others to their feet. Of pushing others ahead of one’s self. Alvans must dig deep. They have paid a heavy price, a price felt in the hearts of every member. They started as a small group fighting to just survive in the first realm to a nation that challenged the combined United Sect Alliance. Publisher's Summary
Reidon Ward will become a god.
He doesn't know it yet, of course. Reidon was born weak, sickly, and small. Afflicted with a painful disease and abandoned by his parents because of it, he has had to fight tooth and nail for every minor advantage life has allowed him.
However, his perseverance has not gone unnoticed, and when the most powerful artificial intelligence in human history takes an interest in him, things began to change quickly. Granted a CAD - a Combat Assistance Device - with awful specs but an infinite potential for growth, Reidon finds himself at the bottom of his class at the Galens Institute, one of the top military academies in the Collective. Along with his best friend, Viviana Arada, Reidon will have to start his long climb through the school rankings and on to the combat tournament circuits that have become humanity's greatest source of excitement and entertainment.
So begins the rise of a god. So begins the ascent of the Stormweaver.

Fun progressive fiction.
This book had some struggles with dialogue and plot. The conversations were often too quippy or full of exposition, and though I expect some of that in every sci-fi or fantasy novel, there were a couple a moments that were too much. Some of it was done pretty well - the nerd trope that two of the main characters have going on gives a reason to be well-versed and informative for the reader and can mask a lot of exposition dumps, but at some points it becomes a crutch. I hope the sequel will lighten up on this.
The plot was predictable at all stages, but I didn't pick this up to be wowed by spectacular plot twists - I picked it up because Space Cyborg Ninja Fights and I got that, damn it. It was a fun romp through campus life, and watching Rei get stronger and try to outhink problems was great popcorn lit. The book does leave us with some dangling plot threads I expect to be woven into a more cohesive pattern when book 2 arrives, whenever that will be.
Luke Daniels did a great job of keeping the voices distinct and engaging, and I think his performance was top-notch.
All in all, if you want something low stakes but fun, you could do worse than Iron Prince. I enjoyed it enough that I'll pick up book 2 when it releases.

Pretty good start
Great start to the series, ill definitely be picking up the next book.
HOWEVER. The story itself is not really original. Your typical started from the bottom school progression story, staring the best friend, the school bully, the forbidden love interest, the teacher, the angry teacher, the rival...yeah you get the picture. The characters themselves arent particularly interesting. I understand their motivations but i didnt find that any of them (including the main) stand out to me.
The narrator is a bit too BREATHY and dramatic at times, it can make some scenes a bit silly and uncomfortable.
The fights can be drawn out and certain parts can be over detailed, several times i found myself spacing out DURING fight scenes. Yikes.
Its better than *Sufficiently Advanced Magic* but not as good as *Cradle*
Still great.

wow
incredible read if you like progressive fantasy. easily the best I've heard in the genre.
very minor annoyances:
* cutting off the swearing midway through
* romance in the book is more akin to 12 year olds rather than 18
* the author definitely goes very red when embarrassed as that's pretty much all anyone does in this book.
highly recommend. may read again.

Great fun book
Great first book. If you like the idea of a Sci Fi, Harry Potter/Enders game coming of age book you will enjoy this book. The narrator is able to have enough different character voices to keep the listener involved and the "LIT" format is not so over done to make the book a endless narration of Statistics. I look forward to the upcoming Stormweaver series books. I think the success of this book will depend on how fast the author is able to get the other books in the series out.

I love the book, but it's too long
The world building, "magic system" and character development are all really well done. Cannot be denied.
The first time I read this book, I could not put it down. I was completely enthralled. I was hoping I would enjoy it just as much 2nd time around in audio form, but I found myself not having patience to sit through it all.
What comes across in the 2nd read, or listen in this case ...is that there are a lot of sections that you can skip through without really missing anything important storywise.
So I guess, my only complaint is that the book can be long-winded at times ...and even that isn't as big an issue on the 1st read/listen. On 2nd listen tho, and I recognize that this is nitpicking because I wanted the book to be a timeless classic that I could go back and enjoy over and over again, I feel like it's too long. Details are over-explained, and honestly there's a lot of fluff in there.
I honestly believe that the book would be better if it were pared down.
That said, I would still highly recommend this book to anyone into progression fantasy. It's a super creative interpretation of the genre, and I am very much looking forward to book 2.

A GREAT book with unique take on sci-fi fantasy.
Between O'Connor, Chmilienko, and Daniels. This book has the best making I've read in a while. 3 great artists. One very great book that is a little outside the norm.
The gamelit aspects are a different spectrum from the normal leveling.
The fantasy tech suits are a nice highlight for the story.
And lastly the story itself has a good bit of uniqueness that doesn't deprive the story of any action drama or mystery.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes sci-fi fantasy, but don't expect much magic in the normal sense though. I feel that the magic like portions of the story will ramp up more in the second book.
