Publisher's Summary

“The finest, most moving and powerful memoir I have ever read.”—MAYIM BIALIK

Rising young comedian Moshe Kasher is lucky to be alive. He started using drugs when he was just 12. At that point, he had already been in psychoanlysis for 8 years. By the time he was 15, he had been in and out of several mental institutions, drifting from therapy to rehab to arrest to...you get the picture. But Kasher in the Rye is not an "eye opener" to the horrors of addiction. It's a hilarious memoir about the absurdity of it all.

When he was a young boy, Kasher's mother took him on a vacation to the West Coast. Well it was more like an abduction. Only not officially. She stole them away from their father and they moved to Oakland , California. That's where the real fun begins, in the war zone of Oakland Public Schools. He was more than just out of control-his mother walked him around on a leash, which he chewed through and ran away.

Brutally honest and laugh-out-loud funny, Kasher's first literary endeavor finds humor in even the most horrifying situations.

What the critics say

“Kasher narrates his unlikely odyssey in surprisingly arresting, and successful, literary terms. . . riotously funny . . .searingly truthful.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Kasher’s stream-of-consciousness writing, coupled with vivid dialogue, make for an emotional story. . . . It is not easy for addicts to dig deep into their emotional truth about their experiences, but Kasher does a remarkable job and should be applauded.”—Washington Post

“A compelling memoir . . . .written in Kasher’s distinctly witty and often frantic narrative voice.”—L.A. Weekly

Compelling story

Great narration and performance. I found the book light and funny despite the heavier and more difficult subjects. I did feel at times that the story was dragging a bit / that the author was complaining but it goes in line with the hopeless situation he felt he was in. I’d recommend this book, listened to it in less than a week.

Honest, unrelenting and full of heart

Fascinating retelling of a troubled youth that has a lot of heart. Some of the one liners are a little basic but this is a story of a life that deserves to be told. Much respect to the author for sharing such an honest recollection of his early years. Not your average comedian written autobiography.

Sad when it’s over.

Sad when a great book ends. This would be a book I wish I could read from the beginning as though I’d never read it before. 💜

Great Book

It was great to finally hear Moshe's full story. I've been a big fan of his stand up and listening to his various podcasts where he made reference to this book, but it was nice to finally hear the full story.

Pete Holmes made reference to the book on his episode a week or two ago so I decided to use up one of my audible credits.

Compelling stories, had my laughing and almost tearing up at the end there when he talks about his graduation.

Maybe the next edition can have an afterward by "Shawn the Bomb"?

Listened to the whole thing in 2 days.

Got in to Moshe from the now defunct 'champs' podcast. My friend had this book and i borrowed it and it was truly inspiring.
I decided this year to revisit it in audiobook form because i love both Moshe's voice, his story telling abilities, and his story.
It did not disappoint.
