About this listen

"And see if there's any news about the missing girl."

Life, as Smith used to say, is just one thing after another - as one investigation ends, a new one begins. But for reasons unknown to the rest of her team, DCI Cara Freeman will be haunted by the next case for the Kings Lake Central murder squad. They find themselves delving into the seamy side of life in the town, and one of their number will have departed before this new investigation is over. Perhaps Detective Sergeant Chris Waters should have seen it coming, but he has a lot more than work on his mind these days.

Disappointing. The humour was conspicuous in its absence. So much could have been done with the Waters issue but Grainger backed away in favor of yet more safe sappy backstories. Time to rescue Smith from the crashing boredom of his marriage long enough to talk Waters out of what is leading up to an even duller one. I read procedurals because I like them. I loved the DC Smith series but since Smith left , King's Lake seems to have lost its way. I swear the narrator misses the Smith..Waters dynamic as much as I do.

Dreary.

Peter Grainger is my newest find and I can’t believe it took me this long to find such an excellent detective series. He weaves the story together brilliantly. Picking up a thread here and there from past books so intricately. He brings tenderness to his detectives when least expected. Read the DC Smith series and then the King’s Lake series. Then read them all again. They do not disappoint.

Another 5 star book by P. G.

Enjoyed very much.

Don’t know why, but the narrator’s attempt at a Somalian accent sounds an awful lot like an Eastern European accent. Not like an actual Somalian accent.

Usual very good quality story; mainly usually great narration

If you enjoy reading novels authored by a superb writer...don’t miss this series, nor the D.C. Investigate series that precedes the Kings Lake series. Mr. Grainger combines his knowledge of police hierarchy and politics, his understanding of how relationships and teams work, and his knowledge of the area in which his novels are set, to bring the reader top notch police procedurals.
Mr. Grainger delivers a first-class read and, as always, the Audible version is beautifully narrated by Gildart Jackson. I’m a dyed-in-the wool fan of both. Each novel not only contains an excellent, well plotted, murder mystery, but continues to give the reader more insight into his fascinating and diverse cast of characters. Mr. Granger’s character building and development has been top-notch from book one, and this continues in Roxanne as the reader is treated to more insights in the personal lives of principal characters. He makes us see his characters as real, with real-life problems, even as we watch them grow into their strengths.
The specialist Murder Squad continues to develop tight working bonds and its members are learning quickly how best to work together as a team under DCI Freeman’s leadership style. Roxanne has some very tense moments and some unexpected twists. As always, there are moments of subtle humour that are scattered throughout all of Mr. Grainer’s work.
I have no hesitation in recommending Roxanne. The novels in the series are both a continuing story and stand-alone mysteries. If you haven’t read the series from Book 1, I definitely suggest you should.

A superbly narrated, top-notch police procedural

I am a Peter Grainger fan and have been waiting for his latest book. I prefer character driven writing as this is. There are no big surprises or plot twists in this novel but the ongoing development of familiar characters is most welcome. Very nicely written with both humour and pathos
The narration is compelling and I have enjoyed Gildart Jackson so much throughout the seies

Engrossing

I love all of Peter Grainger’s books, but this one seemed to Wow me. I love the little bits of humour and how he draws the personality and thought processes out of his characters. Narrator Gildart Jackson is fabulous as always.
Thanks for another fantastic audio book.

Wow, loved this book.

Jackson can be good but too often slips into “bad actor” mode. Doesn’t always get in the way but I wish he wasn’t so over dramatic at times.

The story was good.

Good Story; Adequate Narration

I’m finding I care more about the characters peopling the Kings Lake detachment and area than just about any novel in the last ten years! Wonderful development of who we’ve met and careful tie ins with previous novels while still a riveting stand alone story. Mr Jackson’s narration is superb. Again. And enough teasers of future things to learn about the characters we know and care about to make waiting for the next novel sooo hard!! Thank you Peter for this, now get back to writing ❤️

Another wonderful instalment !
