#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY MARGARET ATWOOD • Stephen King's legendary debut, the bestselling smash hit that put him on the map as one of America's favorite writers • In a world where bullies rule, one girl holds a secret power. Unpopular and tormented, Carrie White's life takes a terrifying turn when her hidden abilities become a weapon of horror.

"Stephen King’s first novel changed the trajectory of horror fiction forever. Fifty years later, authors say it’s still challenging and guiding the genre."—Esquire

“A master storyteller.”—The Los Angeles Times • “Guaranteed to chill you.”—The New York Times • "Gory and horrifying. . . . You can't put it down."—Chicago Tribune

Unpopular at school and subjected to her mother's religious fanaticism at home, Carrie White does not have it easy. But while she may be picked on by her classmates, she has a gift she's kept secret since she was a little girl: she can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. Her ability has been both a power and a problem. And when she finds herself the recipient of a sudden act of kindness, Carrie feels like she's finally been given a chance to be normal. She hopes that the nightmare of her classmates' vicious taunts is over . . . but an unexpected and cruel prank turns her gift into a weapon of horror so destructive that the town may never recover.

Great book.

I'd prefer to give it a 3.5. star rating due to the thick accent of the narrator at some points. Great book, though.

All About The Execution

The "plot" in this early Stephen King novel can be summed up in a sentence: 'A suppressed/abused and bullied highschool girl with psychic powers snaps'.

That's it.

That's the plot.

Do not buy this book looking for clever twists, serial revelations, edifying characterization, or page-turner pacing. What makes 'Carrie' worth reading is a demonstration of how a seemingly pedestrian posit can be turned into an engrossing story. The dialogue is typically realistic, the author makes a fantastical scenario feel plausible, and the mind's-eye visceral descriptions are unsurpassed - this is unabashedly King.

Unfortunately, the narration in this recording lets the story down somewhat. Sissy Spacek is a phenomenal actress, but Random House Audio could have cast this project better. Spacek's diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are fine, but her voice-acting is non-existent (every character sounds identical) and her rate of reading is too slow (I found playback at 1.15X was required for the optimal experience). The performance of this audiobook is distinctly average.

Regardless, fans of Mr. King should definitely have this book in their library - despite the relatively weak production value. It's a fine sample of his unique ability to turn a weak plot (on it's surface) into a mesmerizing book. This 7.5/10 star selection would be great for a long drive or a boring night shift. Spend the Credit.

A classic begging to be read.

Stephen King is a master at taking us into the young minds of impressionable teens.

I can (unfortunately) relate

I was enthralled from start to finish. I felt so bad for Carrie despite how terrifying her finale killing spree was. My only 2 complaints are with the pig scene and a couple others as well as the sex scenes. My complaint with the pig scene and a few others are with how sadistic they where, the way they where describe was sickening at best and something else at worst. My big complaint with the sex scenes is the way they're described, it just makes me feel wrong. I'd figure I feel this way because the book focuses around highschool aged kids. Other than that though I loved this book and can't wait to read it again.
