Publisher's Summary

The problem with secrets is that they’re too easy to keep collecting.

Luna Allen has done some things she would rather no one ever know about. She also knows that, if she could go back in time, she wouldn’t change a single thing.

With three sisters she loves, a job she (mostly) adores, and a family built up of friends she’s made over the years, Luna figures everything has worked out the way it was supposed to.

But when one of those secrets involves the man who signs her paycheck, she can’t find it in her to regret it. Despite the fact that he’s not the friendliest man in the world. Or the most patient.

Sometimes there are things you’re better off keeping to yourself.

Number one overall Amazon Kindle best seller.

Not my genre.

Struggled to finish. Actually skipped through the last 7 or 8 chapters. If you like a harlequin romance novel, this is your book. Narrator was good though.

Amazing

This book. MZ wrote another masterpiece and Callie Dalton was just an amazing narrator once again. Wasn’t sure if I’d like the second person narration, but it was really good. Added a whole new depth to the story line. Highly recommend!

I usually don't write reviews

But this one deserves one. It is a 17hrs read. I read it in two days because I began after noon the first day. I ate it up like I have rarely eaten a book. Beautifully written with an amazing character that feels so strong and amazing, but still real, profound and complete. God I enjoyed this book.

Not her best book

I love all the rest of Mariana Zapata’s that are available on audible. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad book but it pales in comparison to her others.

Entertaining and easy listen

Entertaining and binge worthy. The only thing I'd say is that the main character was pretty oblivious at times. Liked the book anyways.

Two Narrators One Viewpoint

I love MZ and her slow burns. It is a great story, but I really thought the "lie" would have been so much more shocking. It wasn't really part of the story except to act as a catalyst (and maybe an excuse) for the two main characters to interact. (Kind of unnecessary since they work together...) And it happened before the book starts, so yeah I felt like the title might have been a bit misleading. Other than that, I loved this. I read Under Locke a long time ago, so it was great to revisit some of that world too. The story is told from the heroine's POV, but the hero's spoken parts are actually narrated by a man. An unusual way to perform a book with a single perspective. But both narrators were great and I will definitely listen again and again.

Slow Burn Queen

Mariana Zapata is the queen of the slow burn. She never lets you down.

Callie Dalton is amazing. She is the main reason I listen to many of Zapata’s books and not read them.

At first I wasn’t a huge fan of Rip speaking his line. I had never listened to a book doing that before. But it grew on me and I ended up really liking it.

Luna and the Lie

Usually likes Mariana's books but this one is almost boring with no any action. Narrator is excellent - that keeps me listening book until the end.

The Age Gap

I had a really hard time getting passed the age gap between the two main characters. It through me off from start to finish - I just couldn't stop thinking about it.

Triggered

I like Zapata's ruministic style of writing, but this story was a miss for me. The two main characters participate in some highly dysfunctional behavior, then try to rationalize that behavior in a way that perpetuates it, rather than identifying it as manipulative and destructive.

It's not unrealistic, for the most part. Thus, two stars.

However, the realism doesn't really add to the overall value of the story. Yes, people who grow up in dysfunctional families tend to act like this. But... this story acts as validation for the resulting abusive behavior in the victims, and I just can't feel supportive of it.

Luna and Rip don't give each other what they say they need. Instead, they insist multiple times that their partner has no idea what they actually need in a way that denies them their experiences, feelings, and perspectives.

Sometimes, it's true that people don't see what they need. But to force your help on someone without regard for their wants, or to keep pushing someone when they're in a vulnerable state until they are provoked into a response, to harbor resentments without ever actually stepping up and communicating what hurts you, to use verbal "traps" over and over to set yourself up for a claim to victimhood, to completely disrespect someone's request for space, to forgive a pattern of behavior that is absolutely negative without any clear indication that a person has developed beyond their knee-jerk unhealthy reactions or has identified a flaw in their belief system....

No. Just no.

So, with 45 minutes left on the book, I've decided that I no longer care about this couple. I can see them heading into a cycle of psychological/emotional abuse, and I'm not about all that.

The real lie of this story is the happy ending I see looming. Luna is still a victim. She seems to want to stay that way. I think the most disturbing part of this whole book for me is how it celebrates Luna's lack of insight. And because I was so intolerant of the dysfunctional aspects of her behavior, the constant rationalization really started to grate on my nerves. Make no mistake, she's the person that should be apologizing for her behavior throughout most of this story - - a sincere appology, not one that just sets her up to make demands of others from the role of victim, or that sets her up to be coddled and gain attention.

Also, having the male narrator only voice part of the main male character's speaking lines has some weird rhetorical effects. It accentuated some saccharine phrases in a way that crossed over into sappy territory, and it really highlighted some unrealistic dialogue.

Hopefully, Zapata's next book won't be such a trigger for me. If you have a history of abuse in your life, you may want to be wary.

😭

Bravo once again. Beautiful book. This book is quite a bit darker/somber overall compared to the other books that came before. I find myself feeling heavy of heart and spirit for our main characters especially because not all their bigger issues were resolved before the end of the book. I have a feeling that there is more to the sisters' story yet to be told in another book.

I love Callie Dalton and her narrative did not disappoint. Her partnership with Gomez Pugh was awesome.

Slow Burns need Heat/Chemistry/Tension too.

Ok, I know this author is known for the slow burn and I completely went in know this. I loved Luna, her love for her sister’s shines through and she needs them because of her family past. But I don’t think they fully understand what she lived with if they did they might not have been the way they were.

Now for the heart of the matter, this is listed as a romance so where was the chemistry? I get the slow burn but there was no burning. Luna had a one-sided affection that she never showed hardly even in her head.
I was waiting and waiting for the long looks the tension the chemistry we get it at the very, very, end when it was too little too late.
I liked the characters overall but I also felt like this book was way too long, let’s be honest if something anything happened it would have been exciting. ANYTHING but we got like 1 thing and all the eluding to stuff and it just fell flat.

I kept with the book because I was hoping for something. And we got it at the end 17 hours, for 1 hour of the meat.

The narration was FREAKING AWESOME, this is probably why I kept with the book. I really enjoyed both narrators and will be looking for more by Gomez Pugh.

Amazing!!

I have listed this book no less than 10 times, and it hasn't been out long at all. This is another slow burn, perfectly written. As in all other Mariana Zapata books, the character development is off the charts. You actually feel the difference in the characters from beginning to end. Luna is a strong girl l, whom definitely needs someone to put her first. Rip is a tough man who believes he doesn't deserve good things in his life. Somehow the two of them build a relationship that radiates love. The narration in this book was top notch.

Slow Build

This was a great story. You sorta have to be prepared for M. Zapata style of writing. It can be long, drawn out and sometimes repetitive. But the stories are always good, loving and realistic. The narrators were GREAT. I like Callie but I LOVE Gomez Pugh. He has the right amount of raspy in his deep voice. This story is a slow build of two characters and learning about their backgrounds. A grumpy hot tatted dude and an annoying but sweet woman slowly acknowledging their feelings for each other. If you can get pass how mean Rip is to her, you can push through. He eventually comes around, like towards the end. And if you are looking for hot sex, this is not the book for you. There is really only one sex scene but this audible is really good. I would have loved to hear more about the couples time together once they got together. Hopefully, we will get to hear about her sister, her friend and maybe some of the guys that work at the shop.

Below Zapata’s standard.... disappointed

A lot of story about nothing really! Didn’t feel the connection like all of the previous Zapata story lines. It feel like she was writing to fill time, when the story was really 2-3 hours.

Ehhhhh

This is probably my least favorite book from Zapata. I love long books but this really dragged on. As always, Callie was great but it was a bit weird with the male Narrator. It felt like he barely spoke until the last 2 hours of the book.

Really good...but lacking

I’ve listened to all of Mariana Zapatas books and love them all including this one. Saying that Luna and the Lie seemed like there was potential for more that just didn’t happen. Luna’s relationship with Lenny and her sisters didn’t seem as involved as it could have been. I thought more was going to come out of Luna’s relationship with her dad, more conflict or more of a resolution. I liked Rips dialogue being read by a man it was distracting at first but after I got used to it I liked it a lot. It was a really good book and a great listen totally worth the credit but I wish there was more.

Uninspired male narration

I am a big fan of Mariana Zapata books, especially when they are narrated by Callie Dalton. I read Luna and the Lie before listening to the audible book and I'm glad I did. I thought it was a solid book, though no where near as good as Kulti or Wait for It. Luna is super sweet but causes a lot of her own problems because she won't speak up for herself. The biggest issue, however, is the narration. If I hadn't already read it, I doubt I would have been able to get through the audible version despite my love for Zapata and Dalton. The voice for Rip, the male lead, was performed in this weird monotone, fake deep voice that forcibly kicked me out of the story every time he spoke. It definitely ruined the audible experience for me. I really wish Zapata would have used Teddy Hamilton again instead of Gomez Pugh.

A bunch of words does not make a good story

I'm so disappointed in Mariana Zapata latest books. I enjoyed the wall of Winnipeg and me and Kulti, at least they had some humor with all of the constant analyzing in the character's head that happened but I've given up with the last several books including Dear Aaron, With Love, and Luna and the LIE. there's no quick-witted banter or insightful dialogue or much in the way of character development it's just a bunch of words over and over. it's just very disappointing for what I thought was an entertaining author.
