Publisher's Summary
The first suspenseful thriller in the Midnight series from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.
When two hikers disappear from their hometown in Maine, everyone blames the blinding storms. But the truth is far more sinister. Unaware of the danger, tabloid photographer Jayne Sullivan follows an anonymous tip to find the most reclusive sculptor in the art world. Instead, she finds mysterious handyman Reed Kimball - and a small town full of fatal secrets.
Five years ago, Reed buried his homicide detective career along with his wife. But when a hiker is found dead, the local police chief asks Reed for help. Why was a Celtic coin found under the body? And where is the second hiker? Desperate to avoid the media, Reed doesn’t need a murder, a missing person, or a nosey photographer. Until Jayne is attacked, and he realizes that her courage is his undoing. Reed must risk everything to protect her and find a cunning killer.

Did not enjoy
I have read some of her other books and they were good. This one reminded me of a cheesy romance novel. I do like romance books. This one at every turn the author would put a line in about sexual tension between the two. I think it’s a book that should have used the sexual tension better. Plot for murder was ok but the tension of it did not build due to thrown in sentences about sexual tension. I had a hard time getting through this book. I did enjoy her other books

A-W-F-U-L narrator!! Be warned!!!!!!!!!
I've never given a bad review for a book. Usually, if I don't care for a book I skip over doing the review as I have read severAl "poor" reviews on books that I actually enjoyed so I figure I'll let the next reader decide. But the narrator for this book was SO TERRIBLE that I had to say something because his voice for the female role was so distracting and annoying I had to warn the next listener. His narration of the female voices was so comical....it reminded me of my 9 year old grandson pretending to be a girl. It truly made me.cringe every time I heard him....which, since the book was about a female, was more often than not. It totally distracted from the story....I had to stop and start several times because I just could not listen without rolling my eyes. I've loved all of melinda Leigh books I've listened to before, but I will NEVER LISTEN TO ANOTHER BOOK NARRATOR BY THIS GUY!! I suggest people listen to the sample before they purchase this audio....to be sure you can tolerate 9 hours of high pitched whiney female voices.....otherwise, just read the book instead!

Not typical of Melinda Leigh
I'm accustomed to Melinda Leigh's novels being set in Oregon rather than Maine. Midnight Exposure is a suspense mystery with far more than a touch of romance. The narration like the plot of the novel is good, but not special.

Enjoyable Mystery, but predictable
After a troubled past, Jayne is in search of a photo opportunity with a reclusive wood sculptor to help support her family when medical debts pile up. What she finds is a brooding ex-cop, a new stalker and the mystery of a celtic coin found under the body of a hiker. This is an enjoyable story, but not a memorable one. The narrator brings this story up to 4 stars for me and I'd happily listen to Scott Schumaker again. Worth a credit? No. The price is low enough to avoid the use of a credit, especially (at the moment) if you pay out for a Kindle Edition and take advantage of the special $1.99 cost.

Horrible Narration, Not A Great Story!
The story was just okay. Extremely predictable, unrealistic, written poorly, and the narrator's depiction on the female voices was awful! They sounded like some cliched damsel in distress! Made me cringe to listen and I found myself thinking of the way I would have written differently to make it better rather than the corny wording and overuse of big words when simple can have a bigger impact.

Bearly Made It Too The End
I usually enjoy Ms. Leigh's work -- not too heavy romantic suspense but with interesting characters and decent dialogue. This one, however, had so much repetitive stream-of-consciousness with the heroine and the hero (really, once or twice is enough for the same thought in a book) that I began skimming (which I do not like to do but prefer it to endless woolgathering). The suspense was fairly mild -- okay -- but a kidnapped woman having sex within 24 hours of the trauma with a man she has known for how many days? Ms. Leigh attempted to explain this as both the H/h were helpless to stop their attraction even though each of them (repetitively and internally) knew it was not okay for either of them. Just, please! I cannot make this more than a two star even though I have enjoyed many of her other titles.
Scott Schumaker was just ok with the delivery of the story. His inflection and female voices need work.

Not a good reader
Scott Schumaker ruined the story for me with his "accents"/voice changes. Had he just read the story, I would have been able to finish the book. I returned it after only a few chapters.

Narrator ruins a good story
The narrator performance of female voices is awful. This is exceptionally distracting as the lead character is a woman.

Interesting story, but narrator detracts & distracts
While I found the story to be interesting enough, I don’t know if I wouldn’t have enjoyed the story more with a different narrator. My first hint that the narration was going to be a problem was at the start of Chapter 2 when the first female voice was required. I found the imitation of a female voice from this male narrator discordant and it jangled my nerves. Even though life intruded and I had to restart the book several times and I knew the female voice was coming, it still rubbed me wrong each time. The primary female character came across as a weak simp of a girl. That impression given by the sound of her “voice” is a total contradiction to the type of character I feel the author was trying to portray. I wasn’t fond of the primary male voice either. While I don’t claim to be a southerner, I have lived in the South long enough to recognize a Georgia accent. This character is supposed to be from Atlanta, but sounds like a Yankee trying, poorly, to do a Southern accent. Just slowing down the words and trying to draw out a few syllables here and there does not a southern accent make.
The only reason I have made it this far (haven’t finished the story yet, and am not sure I am going to be able to make it to the end) is that I want to find out how the story ends. There were parts where I didn’t really want to skip the story, but the voice was grating so much, that I put the read back at 3X normal speed. Should have just skipped altogether.
