About this listen
The updated edition of the best-selling book that has changed millions of lives with its insights into the growth mindset.
“Through clever research studies and engaging writing, Dweck illuminates how our beliefs about our capabilities exert tremendous influence on how we learn and which paths we take in life.” (Bill Gates, GatesNotes)
After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, PhD, discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset - those who believe that abilities are fixed - are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset - those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.
In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love - to transform their lives and your own.

I personally had a difficult time trying to get into the rhythm of the narrator’s voice, which was a little too “uptight” for me.
Regardless, I’d listen to the book again, because there are many phenomenal demonstrations of how a growth mindset can help affect change in any number of domains.
Thanks Dr. Dweck for the amazing work! Keep growing! 💪

Now, more precisely, the book discusses the differences between the closed mindset: things are as they are and will always be this way, vs. the growth mindset: I can better myself through challenges, meaning not aiming to be perfect but to keep getting better at what I’m not good at. People who have closed mindsets essentially suffer to protect an image of perfection because they’re characteristics are set and can never change. Therefore, if they’re not good now, they’ll never be. She talks a lot about intelligence, and how it is something that can be developed like any other skill. With this in mind, she says you shouldn’t be so concerned about always proving you’re smart, you can always become smarter. She mentions that people who embrace difficult things and surmount them become smarter and stronger, as opposed to people who avoid the challenges because they require effort, therefore breaking they’re image of effortless perfection.
