Publisher's Summary

A Lucille Von Shard Novel

Flight Commander Lucille Von Shard is an ace pilot in the Aeronautica Imperialis, with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Follow her as she faces off against the aerial forces of the orks.

Listen to it because

High-flying dogfights unfold in the skies above Bacchus, as the Imperium clash with orks, and an arrogant hotshot uncovers a secret that could doom the entire planet.

The story

The Aeronautica Imperialis are the masters of the skies in the 41st millennium, waging wars of breakneck aerial combat where only skill stands between victory and death. Flight Commander Lucille von Shard is an ace, a living exemplar of what it means to fly in the name of the Emperor… or so Propagandist Kile Simlex is told.

Braving the foetid waters of Bacchus and its rampaging greenskin hordes, Simlex is tasked with producing a cinema-pict portraying Shard as an Imperial hero. Shortly after his arrival planetside, however, he discovers the war effort is in shambles—the Imperium’s overstretched forces are in full retreat, the local planetary governor is desperately downplaying the conflict at every turn, and Shard is an arrogant misanthrope who only avoids sanction due to her consummate skills.

But these skills may prove the only hope of survival, for something vast and terrible lurks within the clouds. The Green Storm approaches.

Interesting, different, and worth the time

This is a pretty good one. The story and characters stand out as having some depth and interest. It was a compelling listen and hard to put down. The narration is solid and suits the material. The subject matter felt unique since the story is about an imperial propagandist trying to come to terms with the actual war versus what his work needs to be and the nature of the ace pilot he follows. It's also different in the sense there are no Space Marines, Inquisition, Imperial Guard as the primary characters. It's more about the average people of the 40k universe which gave it a unique aspect as far as stories set in this universe. I would read more by the author and listen to more of the narrators work. Worth giving a try.

Easy to Listen to and Enthralling

TLDR: It's a great listen that keeps you invested, and it's easy to follow along with while you play it in the background. My favorite character is flight sergeant Plient.

I will try to keep spoilers to a minimum.
Whenever I turned on Outgunned I was captivated by the story it told. The contrasting characters and deeper understanding of non-imperial guard roles kept me invested in everyone's story. I thought that there wasn't too much focus on any one character. Which is nice because I felt like I was learning about them at my own pace rather than an exposition dump.

I should probably preface this next bit. I have difficulties with paying attention, I had just listened to Double Eagle which is quite the deluge of characters, but still a great listen. I didn't have the same problem with Outgunned. I appreciate Phillip's pronunciation and narration as it would bring me back whenever I found myself drifting off.

Flight Sergeant Plient is adorable. Lucille and Simlex have some pretty good interactions. The orks do what they do best.
If I had to give this book any criticism it's that I wish the ending and other xenos were expanded upon a bit more.
