Publisher's Summary

Darby Kane thrills with this twisty domestic suspense novel that asks one central question: Shouldn’t a dead husband stay dead?

Lila Ridgefield lives in an idyllic college town, but not everything is what it seems. Lila isn’t what she seems.

A student vanished months ago. Now, Lila’s husband, Aaron, is also missing. At first these cases are treated as horrible coincidences until it’s discovered the student is really the third of three unexplained disappearances over the last few years. The police are desperate to find the connection, if there even is one. Little do they know they might be stumbling over only part of the truth.... With the small town in an uproar, everyone is worried about the whereabouts of their beloved high school teacher. Everyone except Lila, his wife.

She’s definitely confused about her missing husband but only because she was the last person to see his body, and now it’s gone.

Mixed feelings...

I have the utmost respect for authors and can't imagine the sweat and tears that go into writing a book. This book kept me very interested in the story and the narrator was outstanding.

The author told a wonderful story with good character development. If I hadn't listened to the last few chapters I would have been totally happy with the story.

What is revealed in the last few chapters unravels the previous hours and hours of character development, because in light of the conclusion, the actions of the characters throughout the rest of the book become very unlikely to the point of being unbelievable.

The twist ending feels insulting because it seems to involve characters from a book that I haven't read or listened to, not the one I just finished.

That being said, and without spoiling what there is, I do not regret spending time listening to this book because I really enjoyed the narrator and most of the story until the slap in the face at the end.

Twisty Domestic Thriller

I almost stopped listening to this book because of the narrator. She always sounds very bored and has a gravelly voice that did not fit the protagonist in this story and is hard to listen to. I liked the story so much though that I kept listening and glad I did. It is a good story and keeps you guessing. Had a satisfying ending for me and all the loose ends tied up nicely. Recommended to read the book, not the Audible.

It was okay.

I’m not sorry I bought it but it wasn’t fantastic. I’m pretty picky though and expect quite a bit from a book to get five stars.

Great book

Listened on a long 7 hour car trip with my 18 year old daughter. We both loved it and couldn’t wait to finish it on the way home!

The most dull narration ever prize goes to...

I struggled to finish it. The first thing that struck me right at the beginning was the horrible narration, I couldn't stand the flat bored voice, and often couldn't decipher which character was speaking, it all sounded the same. It sounded like the narrator was reading a shopping list or some other mundane material with enormous indifference, maybe she also found this book quite dull. Her voice felt like she really didn't want to be there. It was this exceptionally bad that this was the first time I googled the narrator's name and was astounded to find out she was one of the most popular narrators out there. I don't understand how it can be in light of the disastrous performance here. How come nobody with the production tried to improve the narration? There are other listeners who had the same experience like me, so it's not just me. Maybe if I read this book, instead of listening, I had a better opinion on this book.

The idea behind the story is interesting, it started well, but the execution lacked and the plot itself dragged for too long. I lost interest many times, mainly listened to the audible while having a walk outside, unlike with more captivating stories where I almost need to make excuses to listen to it whenever I can. For me it says it all.

The twist wasn't a surprise for me, was actually pretty much what I suspected from the start. I hoped it would be something different but no such luck. I don't understand the raving reviews. This book is nothing special and was ok for passing the time.

Disappointed.

I am an avid audible reader and rarely write reviews. But I am surprised by the high rating this book has received. I waited for months for it to come out. Xe Sands is one of my favorite narrators. But not with this story. I found the narration flat and i was often lost trying to figure out which character was speaking. The story just never captured me and I tried hard to get into it. Just not worth the credit for me. Sorry I wish it had been as great as was hyped.

I hate the narration SO MUCH

I'm only a few chapters in and I can not even tell if the book would be good with another narrator or read instead of audio because the I CAN NOT STAND THIS WOMAN'S VOICE. She sounds like she's on drugs.. doesn't change her tone AT ALL between characters or thoughts... nothing. just monotonous droning that all blends together. SO BAD. I've literally never heard someone this bad, ever. I'm going to keep listening to see if I can get into it regardless but It's not looking possible at this rate. So bad. I feel sorry for thr Author.

So Good!!!!

I did not want this book to end. From the first sentence to the last word I was hooked. There is a book to savor. The characters are compelling, the prose is perfection - and the twists and turns were eye-popping. Pretty Little Wife is such a very good book. I can’t wait to see what Darby Kane does next.
Also - Xe Sands’ performance was enthralling. The perfect narrator for this thriller.

Excellent Book

I pick a lot of books (usually without putting too much effort into selection) as something to listen to and keep me focused during my workday. My job is tedious and detailed and audio books allow me to listen to a good story but also stay more in tuned to my work. I was pleasantly surprised with this book, it kept me very engaged while fitting the pieces together up until the end. I actually grew to like the main character whom I had no real opinions of initially. Definitely recommend this book and I look forward to more by the author.

If you are a trauma survivor,

the book may have some trigger points. It isn't gory-graphic, but it does nail the emotional savageness that comes with being in a realtionship that has a menacing lop-sided M/F power balance. The author has a good handle on women dealing with/surviving/thriving male egos and narcissists.

I had a hard time staying with it at times, it's too wordy. The story could have been wrapped up in six hours.
If you read this genre often, the end won't come as a surprise since it does stick with the S.O.P. formula for the genre. I wasn't surprised by the ending tho it did have some twists and turns that I didn't anticipate.

I'm not a huge fan of Xe Sands since she has a narrow range when it comes to inflection and tones, can be confusing to know which character she is narrating in dialogue sections. I was intrigued enough by the plot blurb to power thru with her as the narrator but at times it wasn't easy. In this case, she nails the lead character's need for the "Am I crazy?"angst-y tone, but the rest of the narration is bland, almost sleep inducing at times.

On the plus side, all the characters are fleshed out well, you end the listen feeling like you did get to know them and wish you knew more about them.

FINALLY.....

a mystery that the listener won't solve half way through!!!! Loved this. I also really like Xe's narrations, it was by looking for more books read by her that led me to this gem.

okay story, narration not so good!

The story was fine, but dragged on, and on. The narrator's voice was annoying and all the other characters sounded, exactly the same. And after a while she even sounded bored. I thought it would NEVER end, and I endured to the end, just for an implausible end. waste of credit!
