Publisher's Summary

A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs - including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of 13, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family’s horrific loss. In his mid-30s - addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate - Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.

This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It’s a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Review of Steven King's Revival

I have recently come to love the books of Steven King. His books like The Stand, 11.22.63, Under The Dome and Revival are great epics that you can really get lost in. His writing style is so easy to follow, especially in an audio book format.

There is humour, drama and comedy in most of the stories that I've read.

I found myself looking forward to my commute and putting in the earbuds and listening to this all the way home.

This one actually scared me when I was lying in bed beside my wife. I had to cover up under the blankets and scootch up closer to my wife because the goose bumps crept up my back when I was closer to the climax of the story.

Great fun and a great listen...I recommend it!

A different type of horror

This was not your average Stephen King "horror" novel.
The pace of Revival lulls you but the subtle message that something bad lurks in the background never leaves.

good and meh

it was a nice story to be told, I'm not sure reading it would have been as nice. I haven't read enough SK to know of he does subtext/unreliable narrator stuff, but we semi had to make up theories at book club to make it a bit more interesting. it was fine. but writing books is hard so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dont waste your time.

Very slow boring book. It really never gets going and just clunks along. Not one of Kings finest.

Just Dreadful

I could not finish more than an hour of this book. It was so slow and boring. The narrator did his best, I actually loved listening to his voice as he does a young boys voice and older voices very well. However, a narrator cannot save a book this boring. Too many religious references also. I expected a Stephen King Horror book, but I could not wait for the scary stuff (if it ever comes).

couldnt get through it

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

someone just wanting to pass time

What do you think your next listen will be?

Peter Brett

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Revival?

Ughh. Probably delete them all.

Any additional comments?

usually like SK, but this was so boring that I gave up on it halfway through the book.

Huh? I'm a huge Stephen King fan but what?!

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

Wow, I have read nearly everything SK has written. Love the Dark Tower and all the classics, but this book is like the worst parts of Tommyknockers and Joyland combined. Big surprise for me how much I didn't like it.

What the Hell Happened?

What did you love best about Revival?

There wasn't really much to recommend this book. I haven't a clue what I can say about it other than there were few spelling mistakes

Which character – as performed by David Morse – was your favorite?

I'm not a fan of narrator's taking on, obviously, the voices of the different characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Bring a pillow

Any additional comments?

Stephen King, as much as I love him, really missed the mark with this one.

Boring

What disappointed you about Revival?

There was too much history of these peoples past lives and very little drama and suspense
I expected more from this novel. It wasn't scary at all!

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen King again?

Deffently yes!

What didn’t you like about David Morse’s performance?

He had a boring story to read

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No not really

Any additional comments?

I guess I'm just a supernatural, vampire, ghost loving kinda constant reader. Love ha Steven!

When will something happen...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I couldn't wait for it to end and I have read and enjoyed many of Kings books. Was it a meditation on aging? Was it a good idea that he couldn't make work? I kept pushing on, waiting for the payoff... but into the last hour I resigned it would never come. Great narration but oh wow... one should never be bored in a SK tale... and well... here it is.

Has Revival turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

What does David Morse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great characterization

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed

that went on too long.
