Publisher's Summary

A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism, and what might exist on the other side of life.

In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs - including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. With Jamie, the Reverend shares a deeper bond based on a secret obsession. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief, and is banished from the shocked town.

Jamie has demons of his own. Wed to his guitar from the age of 13, he plays in bands across the country, living the nomadic lifestyle of bar-band rock and roll while fleeing from his family’s horrific loss. In his mid-30s - addicted to heroin, stranded, desperate - Jamie meets Charles Jacobs again, with profound consequences for both men. Their bond becomes a pact beyond even the Devil’s devising, and Jamie discovers that revival has many meanings.

This rich and disturbing novel spans five decades on its way to the most terrifying conclusion Stephen King has ever written. It’s a masterpiece from King, in the great American tradition of Frank Norris, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Review of Steven King's Revival

I have recently come to love the books of Steven King. His books like The Stand, 11.22.63, Under The Dome and Revival are great epics that you can really get lost in. His writing style is so easy to follow, especially in an audio book format.

There is humour, drama and comedy in most of the stories that I've read.

I found myself looking forward to my commute and putting in the earbuds and listening to this all the way home.

This one actually scared me when I was lying in bed beside my wife. I had to cover up under the blankets and scootch up closer to my wife because the goose bumps crept up my back when I was closer to the climax of the story.

Great fun and a great listen...I recommend it!

A different type of horror

This was not your average Stephen King "horror" novel.
The pace of Revival lulls you but the subtle message that something bad lurks in the background never leaves.

good and meh

it was a nice story to be told, I'm not sure reading it would have been as nice. I haven't read enough SK to know of he does subtext/unreliable narrator stuff, but we semi had to make up theories at book club to make it a bit more interesting. it was fine. but writing books is hard so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not his best!!

What disappointed you about Revival?

I am a huge fan of Stephen King, but this book is not one of my favorites. The story tended to drag on and at the end I was glad it was over. The book was dry and not engrossing! I felt bad for he main character who grew up in the story because the other main character seems to befriend at first and then turns against him. I would NOT recommend this book....! David Morse was a great narrator!

Has Revival turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

Which scene was your favorite?

None

Any additional comments?

I would not recommend this book. Sorry, Stephen King! :-(

When will something happen...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I couldn't wait for it to end and I have read and enjoyed many of Kings books. Was it a meditation on aging? Was it a good idea that he couldn't make work? I kept pushing on, waiting for the payoff... but into the last hour I resigned it would never come. Great narration but oh wow... one should never be bored in a SK tale... and well... here it is.

Has Revival turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

What does David Morse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great characterization

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed

Expected more from Stephen King

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator was great to listen to. I just think that being a Stephen King novel it should have had a better ending. This could have been a better story with a better ending that wasn't summed up in a matter of 2 chapters.

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Stuck to his creepy writing with a story line that had a better ending. This ending deflated my expectations of a Stephen King novel.

What does David Morse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great voice, great imitations of characters, I wouldn't change anything that David Morse did.

What character would you cut from Revival?

All the characters were great

Any additional comments?

Just a disappointment from all the other Stephen King books that I have read or listened to.

Boring!

This is not a typical Stephen King book. Just drones on and on about nothing. Can't even get invested in characters. Boring , quit after 3 hours of droning!

Slow and anticlimactic

I was very disappointed with this book. It was slow and then slower and the big finale was so weak it really disappointed. I'm a Stephen King fan but certainly not a fan of this particular work.

How did this book get a 4.0 rating? The book, with a few exceptional moments, was BORING and SLOW!! Characters were bland and quite a bit of really foul language. After 5 hours of torture I revved the speed up to 1.5 to get through it faster. I really like King, but this one was just painful.

No more

I keep hoping with every new novel that the old King has returned. His newer stuff bores me. For me, these recent novels are long winded with little excitement. I guess the kid in me just wants to be entertained. I have yet to find another author like the old King, and unfortunately I don't think I ever will.

this book is just awful

Not only is this long and dragged out in soo many typical Stephen King fashions. but the plot isn't even known until the end and let me tell you, it's a long way to go to get there. If I wasn't determined to finish this before moving on to a new book. I would never have picked it back up. I've always been a huge Stephen King fan and this is by far probably the worst book he's written. The story is seriously lacking and so drawn out its unnecessary. I can't recommend this to anyone
