Publisher's Summary

Meet a genuine American folk hero cut from the homespun cloth of America's heartland: Sam Walton, who parlayed a single dime store in a hardscrabble cotton town into Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in the world. The undisputed merchant king of the late 20th century, Sam never lost the common touch.

Here, finally, inimitable words. Genuinely modest, but always sure of his ambitions and achievements. Sam shares his thinking in a candid, straight-from-the-shoulder style. In a story rich with anecdotes and the "rules of the road" of both Main Street and Wall Street, Sam Walton chronicles the inspiration, heart, and optimism that propelled him to lasso the American Dream.

Fantastic book. GREAT narrator!

The narrator often makes or breaks the book. This narrator did an excellent job and was a superb choice.

An inspiring story of hard work and dedication. It's stories like this that keep me pushing on in business endeavours!

This book is right up there with The Snowball and Shoe Dog which were great reads (actually read these two. If you are turned off by the narrator on The Snowball definitely go read it. It's Ana amazing book but that narrator murders it...in a bad way lol).

I had a great time listening to this audiobook.

the storytelling was great and the narrator did a fantastic job reading the book. i would especially highly recommend it to anyone in the retail business. I work in a different industry, but I still had a great time and learned very much on what it takes to build a business empire such as walmart.

Sal Walton Made in America is a story of a man who decided that he will be productive with his time. Every single second of it. He will plow through the up's, downs and in betweens. I enjoyed this book immensely because I have an understanding of what it takes to be a billionaire.

Highly recommended!

Capitalism Is The Way

Sam Walton was a man who loved his country, company, employees, customers, and family. He showed his love mostly in his actions. A giant of giants, yet humble from beginning to end. He ran purely on love of what he did. Wonderful book, with good insight into his life.

A great story of a great man and a great company

The performance was outstanding. The narrator demonstrated the energy and enthusiasm of the author himself. It felt like the author was reading the book. The best performance by a narrator other than the author that I've listened to in my 15 years as an audible platinum subscriber. And the story was incredible.

This book inspired me. You just fall in love with the man. And later he brings a tear to your eye.

He is a true leader and I wish i had the chance to meet him. God bless that man.

A simple look into the retailing giant's history

“Made in America” provides a fun, simple look into how Walmart got its start and eventually grew into the behemoth that it is today. It features the perspectives of several Walmart executives and employees, including Sam and Helen Walton, as well as many other associates along the way.

I enjoyed it for its simple, story-telling nature, and some of its insights into the retail industry. It’s not the kind of book you’ll walk away from with a pseudo-PhD in business, but it does provide some good lessons as to how to build a company, stay scrappy, and keep employees motivated.

A couple of things I could’ve done without were Walton’s insistence that Walmart has not had an adverse effect on small-town America and his admitting to taking many of his ideas from competitors.

Sure, the small-town America thing is somewhat a matter of perspective, but I just don’t see how he can argue that he didn’t put folks out of business and change small-town economies. And, in terms of the “copying,” thing, I certainly admire his honesty, but it just runs counter to the humble, good-faith persona he paints throughout the rest of the book.

All in all, though, this title is definitely enjoyable. It’s not one that’s going to change your life, but it will help you take a trip down memory lane and grab some business lessons in the process. I would recommend reading it.

"My Father's Business" is Better

A long book with a few nuggets along the way. There is much more on decision making, authentic leadership, entrepreneurship, and humility in "My Father's Business" than this book. this book has a moment or two but not much more

Very happy Sam wrote this before he left us. Book is easy to follow and shows he was well educated and a hard worker, not just a novel fluke.
