Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.

Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.

One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.

Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

What the critics say

“The touch of fantasy interjected into this compelling audiobook is a unique departure from author Kate Quinn's usual historical fiction.… The narrators make the characters so real that listeners can suspend disbelief and feel their tension, grit, and cleverness. Both narrators display considerable linguistic talent as they portray these heroes with warmth and bravado.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

Fabulous

Amazing how two people talking and some narration can allow the reader/listener to be immersed in an unreal reality. Another triumphant achievement for Kate Quinn. Please keep them coming.

Not Long Enough

I read the Alice Network and Kate Quinn’s storytelling is something Special.
So of course I read more of her work and the Alice Network has remained a favourite until I heard the short story of Signal Moon.
Please make this into a full novel!

Time Travel Novel

I personally love past/future novels so totally was emererced in the novel and wished it was so much longer. A lovely tease. Great narrators. I hope Kate Quinn will do a longer novel of this type.

A very different Kate Quinn story

Enjoy all of Kate Quinn’s work. This was a different twist on a war story than I was expecting. But it drew me and the end tugged at the heart.

Short and Sweet

Kate Quinn delivers beautifully mixing 1940's historical fiction with "time shift" to 2023 and makes it work! Cudos to the narrators ie. Saskia Maarleveld (always superb) and Andrew Gibson (new to me) who make this story so believable! Love the short story format bringing another element of the behind-the-scene stories of WWII.
