Publisher's Summary

"No-one does suburban paranoia like Shari Lapena - this slowly unfurling nightmare will have you biting your nails until the end." (Ruth Ware, number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Woman in Cabin 10

The new domestic suspense novel from New York Times best-selling author of The Couple Next Door, A Stranger in the House, and An Unwanted Guest, Shari Lapena

Maybe you don't know your neighbors as well as you thought you did....

"This is a very difficult letter to write. I hope you will not hate us too much.... My son broke into your home recently while you were out."

In a quiet, leafy suburb in upstate New York, a teenager has been sneaking into houses - and into the owners' computers as well - learning their secrets, and maybe sharing some of them, too.

Who is he, and what might he have uncovered? After two anonymous letters are received, whispers start to circulate, and suspicion mounts. And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their own secrets?

In this neighborhood, it's not just the husbands and wives who play games. Here, everyone in the family has something to hide....

You never really know what people are capable of.

What the critics say

"Slyly plotted...Lapena skillfully maximizes suspense with her dual story lines that eventually collide, as well as some deft misdirection...many fans of domestic suspense will be satisfied.” (Publishers Weekly)

The ending is the only exciting part

It’s a simple who done it? don’t expect more. Too many characters, not much development of any of them, seemed long and drawn out and then a twist ending.

Boring story, assault of toddler. Leave out the sex details.

An interesting story without having to listen to details of being felt up or sexual encounters would be great. “Someone We Know”, minimally held my attention, but I forged ahead, waiting for it too get better. It got worse. I definitely don’t want the image of a toddler being made to lay over a chair to be brutally tortured with a whip to intrude upon my mind. So disgusting , I hate to write it here. Get it out of my ear!
The husband in the story is s a vile man.
I wish I hadn’t wasted a credit on this one. Stopped listening as soon as the account of the child torture began.

To be continued?

Lapena has done it again, another banger. She has me holding on to the end every time. Boy oh boy, this was a good story and plot. You never would have guessed who it was, Never. Chile, all over the neighborhood slut Amanda, I meant wife. All the husbands and friends were messing around with Roberts wife, but he wasn't innocent himself. Is there gonna be a part 2, because the way it ended, SHARI? #book38outof2019 #bookworm #whatsnext

Great Listen/Read

I really love Shari Lapena’s novels. They always surprise me. This is her 4th novel and I was really excited for it as I truly was shocked at the ending of her 3rd. This one surprised me but not as much as the last. I ended up having the ending half right. It seemed to also end on a cliffhanger which I wasn’t expecting. So hopefully there will maybe be a second book coming. Or maybe it’s just supposed to be open to interpretation. Either way, I really enjoyed the book and I can’t wait to see what she does next. The narrator was also very good!

Perfect choice for book club!

Someone We Know: A Novel by Shari Lapena, narrated by Kirsten Potter is a suspenseful domestic thriller that will keep you guessing....and guessing...and guessing through to the end. Filled with twists and turns, Lapena's fast-paced, multi-narrative story is told from the POV of multiple members of various families living throughout the neighborhood. From break-ins and murder to book clubs and barbeques, this group of "friends" has quite a bit to gossip about, and as each day passes, they begin to wonder if they really know each other at all.

Right from the start I was hooked. I was able to quickly put together the pieces and see how certain storylines were related. Of course, I thought I knew where the story was headed multiple times, but (similar to Lapena's other books), I was wrong. In fact, I was wrong so many times that I felt like I was one of the ladies in the neighborhood gossiping about the recent "happenings." As each additional piece of the puzzle is revealed, we get closer and closer to the truth, but what if the truth involves those you hold closest to your heart? How far would you go to protect the ones you love?

The performance by Kirsten Potter is excellent. This is the first time I've listened to her narrate. Her level of emotion was high and so realistic that I felt like I was there watching the events unfold. She literally "acted out" the parts of each character so well that they seemed like real people. Loved it!

Someone We Know: A Novel by Shari Lapena, narrated by Kirsten Potter gets my overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The reason I took a star off is because I felt like there were so many characters; I kind of had a hard time keeping track of everyone. This may sound corny, but I think I would have had an easier time absorbing all the details if there was a sketch/map of the neighborhood to look at, labeled with the names of where each person and family lived. Obviously, this is just a personal preference, but if anyone chooses this for their monthly book club read (and I highly recommend you do!), you may want to map out the neighborhood as the story progresses. While everyone will not find this to be necessary, I promise at least 1-2 of you will, and they will thank you in the end. I also recommend this book to those who enjoy mysteries and thrillers, as well as stories about family and relationships. Lapena gives you a lot to think about (and potentially discuss) in this one! I think you will enjoy this audiobook..I did! It is definitely worth the credit!

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. Happy listening! :-)

Predictable but a fun ride

Predictable but a fun ride. Although I had guess the murderer close to the beginning of the book, the narrator had made this a fun listen. If you’re just looking for some light entertainment it is worth the credit.
