About this listen

The sequel to the New York Times best seller Skyward!

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Reckoners series, Words of Radiance, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive comes the second book in an epic series about a girl with a secret in a dangerous world at war for humanity's future.

All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.

Spensa is sure there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars - and it was terrifying. Everything Spensa has been taught about her world is a lie.

But Spensa also discovered a few other things about herself - and she'll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.

"[A] nonstop, highflying opener." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

"With this action-packed trilogy opener, Sanderson offers up a resourceful, fearless heroine and a memorable cast." (Publishers Weekly)

"Sanderson delivers a cinematic adventure that explores the defining aspects of the individual versus the society.... Fans of Sanderson will not be disappointed." (SLJ)

Brandon Sanderson again weaves a tale so enchanting you can't stop until you finish it all, as soon as possible. Excellent narration as well.

You saw all the reviews raving so I won’t rave some more but most of the criticism is correct. I’m to lazy to write a big review because all that was said is said!

Amazing!

I loved it. Sanderson builds an amazing expensive world while also developing Spenca as our lead character. however this really was a middle book and I was hoping for more character development in our side characters. Hopefully the next book will being us closer, and more developed side characters. would highly recommend reading it.

it's a middle book

This was/is quite a great story. It's written in a way to communicate to a younger crowd (teens). But the story itself is worthy of some of the past sci-fi masters (Heinlen; Hubbard; Niven). It has many layers and I found it quite fascinating where the story and technology leads.
Brandon Sanderson can do Sci-fi! While I am more excited about the next Stormlight book, I also look forward to carrying on with this series.

The new setting was great. The alien species Spensa encounters were fun. The bigger picture view of the galaxy was compelling.

Some aspects of the plot were just a little bit too convenient though. Things just line up for Spensa in a way that pushed suspension of disbelief. It was a little too much to think she would do some of what she does, or that things would just play out for her the way they do.

This one has more politics as well. It doesn't come at the expense of action because there is plenty of that. She just has to deal with bigger picture circumstances than ever before.

Spensa also has a new team that is less fun than the old one. With a couple exceptions we don't see much of anybody else from the first book.

There is still a lot to like and it was a worthwhile listen. I just hope the rest of the series allows more consistency and less obvious plot convenience.

Good but...

Delightful and charming characters. A hero going up against crazy odds. Brandon Sanderson’s style, humour and crescendo, is riveting.
I’d recommend this to all who loves good storytelling.

Amazed at Brandon Sanderson’s skills as a storyteller.
