Publisher's Summary

Jonathan Stride and Serena Dial are both investigating high-profile murders in Las Vegas. A celebrity is assassinated during a fling with a prostitute, and a young boy is killed in a brutal hit-and-run incident. When the cases converge, Jonathan and Serena find themselves racing the clock against a determined serial killer and searching for a connection to the unsolved murder of a showgirl years earlier.

Freeman's vivid cast of characters exposes all of Las Vegas' dirty secrets, past and present. And in a rooftop showdown amid the ruins of a 1960s-era casino, the chase comes to a stunning climax.

Like the author's Immoral, Stripped pushes the emotional and sexual limits of its heroes and keeps the listener riveted until the last shocking plot twist.

Ridiculously Hypersexualized.. but Passable

I have no problem with some explicit sex - in fact, it adds a sense of warts-and-all realism to fiction focussed on the seedier elements of society (the ones that law enforcement are forced to confront) - but this Crime Thriller takes it a little too far. Brian Freeman takes the "Sin City" aspects of Las Vegas (gambling, prostitution, hedonistic sex & drugs) to jawdropping extremes in this tale.
The characters are interesting, the dialogue is capably scripted, the investigation is twisty-turny, and the crimes are plotted nicely (albeit being a little overly-complicated), but Freeman colors his story with X-rated scenes that only succeed in taking readers out of the illusion of realism for an otherwise captivating Procedural ("The hooker took his cock in her mouth and sucked harder as he got close").
It's not totally off-putting.. just a little too much.

As to narration: It must be pointed out that Joe Barrett is NOT a good voice-actor. His crisp diction, baritone timbre, comfortable cadence, and emotive tone for this recording are all legitimately praiseworthy (and the technical support from Blackstone Audio is exemplary) - but his Minnesota accent for detective 'Jonathan Stride' is over-the-top, his sultry husky-whisper for transgendered detective 'Amanda Gillan' is straight-up chuckleworthy, and I'm frankly amazed that his cartoonishly racist Black character voices were permitted to stand.
(Note: Barrett is admittedly following the script he was given: Freeman writes laughably stereotypical "jive-talking street-N-word" dialogue.)

Even if you can get it for free, investing the time to listen to this 5/10 star offering might be tough to justify. You're not crazy to give it a try if you are in love with the gritty Mystery-Thriller genre (as I am), but even then.. should they ask for a Credit.. I recommend a Pass.

I was really happy with this story by the end!

This story, Stripped, by Brian Freeman, is full of well-rounded characters, and a story involving them that made me happy at the end. I like Joe Barrett's narration of the protagonist, with his Minnesota accent, but I have trouble with the others. However, the well-written characters overcome that. The setting of Las Vegas and old Las Vegas was fun; but I have to say, thank goodness that in today's Las Vegas it's much more family friendly to visit! ;) Audible doesn't have Freeman's 3rd and 4th books in the Jonathan Stride series, so I'm going on to listen to the 5th book in the series, 'The Burying Place' to see what happens next!

Meh

I’ve liked other books from Freeman, but this one was pretty boring. I don’t really recommend.
