Barliona: a virtual world jam-packed with monsters, battles - and, predictably, players. Millions of them come to Barliona, looking forward to the things they can't get in real life: elves and magic, dragons and princesses, and unforgettable combat. The game has become so popular that players now choose to spend months online without returning home. In Barliona, anything goes: You can assault fellow players, level up, become a mythical hero, a wizard, or a legendary thief. The only rule that attempted to regulate the game demanded that no player be allowed to feel actual pain. But there's an exception to every rule. For a certain bunch of players, Barliona has become their personal hell. They are criminals sent to Barliona to serve their time. They aren't in it for the dragons' gold or the abundant loot. All they want is to survive the virtual inferno. They face the ultimate survival quest.

Jonathan Yen is an incredible narrator. I'm huge into LitRPG's and he is my favorite narrator by far. I keto coming back to this series, I'm on listen 3 or 4. easily the best I've series of any genre that I've been exposed to. love the writing, love the characters more than anything. I find that I keep thinking of them all in my normal life, causing more listening. can't say enough great things. thank you Vasily Mahanenko. wait....I just got it, Mahan, the name of the lead character, author named gingerly as the lead. Embarrassing that I just figured this out.

For fans of LiteRPG's, Vasily Mahanenko has managed to create a world in which readers/listeners can truly emerge themselves in the world of Barliona. Mahanenko has managed to create a story that is unique in which the main character must not only find a way to survive in a virtual world, but also in reality. A great balance between fantasy and reality, with plot twists and character development written in ways that only work to further entice the reader/listener.

Overall this is one of my favorite series, it gives the readers/listeners a chance to relate to the characters in the story and escape our reality into the world of Barliona page by page.

I was obsessed with this book. So much fun and great narration by Jonathan Yen! Any spare minutes I had, I was listening, but feeling guilty as I watched the hours drain away. Now 2 while days to wait until my next credit arrives so I can start book 2!

I'm reviewing this after the fifth book. The premise itself is actually quite interesting and the performance while not the best I've heard, is pretty good. The story is nothing special, and nothing terrible, though the characters aren't the best. I wouldn't pay for it but if you can get it though Audible Plus it's worth listening to if you have nothing better. I would warn though, the author appears to have some rather, old fashioned, ideas about women. It's not horrific but definitely feels a few (like 5) decades out of place when a random sexist comment is made. While not frequent, at least in the more overt displays of sexism, it is consistent throughout the entire series. There are some more subtle themes of it as well in many of the female characters. I managed to deal with it but if you're easily offended by something like that, these books are not for you.

Obviously I’m on a different page than the rest of the groups. I selected this title as it was ranked high on a top 10 list for LitRPG books. I understand it is one of the early books in that genre and that it is translated from Russian, but I was not prepared for how mediocre it is. It’s just not that interesting, the writing is one dimensional and there is essentially no thought given to story and character development (as in actually revealing information about characters). If you are only interested in crafting, player stats and unnecessarily complicated and arbitrary game rules, then this is the book for you! The narration is okay but i sort of felt sorry for him, given the material. I tried several times to finish the book but eventually gave up.
