Story
People are less in touch with their bodies - and especially their breathing - than ever before. Ironically, athletes and others who pride themselves on taking care of their bodies actually put themselves at greater risk. Why? Because they’re asking their body to take on next-level demands, but failing at life’s most essential skill: efficient breathing.

Story
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

The Brave Athlete solves the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. You don't have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that accesses your memories and runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that's when bad things happen. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don't want? You can.

Story
We all think we know the South. Even those who have never lived there can rattle off a list of signifiers: the Civil War, Gone with the Wind, the Ku Klux Klan, plantations, football, Jim Crow, slavery. But the idiosyncrasies, dispositions, and habits of the region are stranger and more complex than much of the country tends to acknowledge. In South to America, Imani Perry shows that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and that our understanding of its history and culture is the key to understanding the nation as a whole.

Story
CrossFit trainer Ben Bergeron has helped build the world's fittest athletes, but he's not like other coaches. He believes that greatness is not for the elite few; that winning is a result, not a goal; and that character, not talent, is what makes a true champion. His powerful philosophy can help anyone excel at all aspects of life. Using the dramatic competition between the top contenders at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games® as a background, Ben explores the step-by-step process of achieving excellence and the unique set of positive character traits necessary for leveling up to world-class. The mindset and methodology that have produced some of the greatest athletes in the world's most grueling sport can work equally well for golfers, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs - anyone who's willing to commit totally to becoming better than the best.

Publisher's Summary
Believe and be unshakable.
The Director of West Point’s Performance Psychology Program shares the secrets of mental toughness and self-belief in this new definitive guide to mastering confidence, the key to performance in any field.
“Studying confidence with Dr. Zinsser helped me win two Super Bowls. I recommend The Confident Mind to competitors everywhere.” —Eli Manning
Dr. Nate Zinsser has spent his career training the minds of the U.S. Military Academy’s cadets as they prepare to lead and perform when the stakes are the very highest—on the battlefield. Alongside this work, he has coached world-class athletes including a Super Bowl MVP, numerous Olympic medalists, professional ballerinas, NHL All-Stars, and college All-Americans, teaching them to overcome pressure and succeed on the biggest stages.
Dr. Zinsser has come to understand that one single trait above all others makes peak performance possible: confidence, or the belief in oneself. Whether your mission involves leading a platoon into combat, returning an opponent’s serve, or delivering a sales pitch to a roomful of skeptical prospects, you perform best when you are so certain about your abilities that your flow of fear, doubts, and confusion slows to the barest minimum. What’s more, Dr. Zinsser has come to understand that confidence is a skill that can be taught, improved, and applied by anyone to enhance nearly every aspect of our lives and careers.
Now, for the first time, Dr. Zinsser distills his research and years of experience, offering a fascinating guide to the science of confidence and providing readers with a practical, step-by-step program to best harness their belief in themselves to achieve success in any field. The Confident Mind is a complete guide to confidence: how to understand it, how to build it, how to protect it, and how to rely upon it when your performance matters most.
Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.

What the critics say
“Studying confidence with Nate Zinsser brought me to the next level in my football career and helped me win two Super Bowls. People talk all the time about how a confident attitude is what makes people succeed in pressure situations, but rarely does anyone actually do anything about it. Here is your chance: I recommend The Confident Mind to competitors everywhere, no matter what sport or what ‘game’ they play.” (Eli Manning, Two-time Super Bowl MVP)

Empirical, Not Anecdotal
Amazingly, there’s not that much that is truly new in this book. But it is the explanation, the context, all of the true life story performance enhancements, and the tools and techniques that the author introduces that collectively make this a phenomenal book.
The book is organized chronologically: Getting hold of your past, performing great in the current, and preparing for your future performance.
I personally found the CBA technique to be the most relevant and powerful to my white-collar athlete career. C stands for Cue. B stands for breathe. A stands for attach. It’s all laid out beautifully in chapter 8.
Alan Kay of Disney was fond of saying context is worth 50 IQ points. The same can be said of Nate Zinsser: after 30 years of practicing what he preaches at West Point, he fully and completely understands sports psychology, and how it applies to every day life.
Read or listen to the book with an open mind. Pick one or two of the wonderful exercises that the author recommends. And get your “18%” improvement in performance.

Helped me develop professional confidence
I am a college student studying design and read this book to gain confidence in my professional skills. My biggest problem was procrastinating on work I felt was beyond my skills. Another problem is the design professors in my college are excessively critical, and break down the students confidence. The book gave me some journalling techniques as well as methods to reframe my internal voice. As David Goggins says, the most important conversation is the one you have with yourself. I don't know much about performance psychology but this book helped me with my confidence in my design skills. I believe my improvements were a result of implementing the recommended daily habits.
I'm not picky about audiobook quality. Seemed fine to me,

Redundant and uninsightful
Lots of redundant anecdotal stories. The stories seem big on name dropping either the person he worked with or the institution.
In the end it didn’t really build up to much that was either insightful or applicable.
