Publisher's Summary

A witty, romantic comedy of errors as former high school rivals McKenna and Henry inadvertently reunite in their hometown.

Hot-shot lawyer McKenna Keaton finds herself in hot water with her own law firm when she’s (falsely!) accused of embezzlement. Placed on unpaid leave, she suddenly finds herself with the free time to return home and attend her youngest sister’s wedding activities.

But it’s not all fun and games. Waiting back home is shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess. Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham, North Carolina’s, darling son, who has attained all his dreams and more. He also happens to look like he stepped out of an Eddie Bauer catalog.

Whereas McKenna is a disgraced workaholic from New York on unpaid leave, accused of a white-collar crime she would nevercommit, succumbing to panic attacks, watching her dreams unravel. At age thirty-eight—and destined by the family curse to die before she turns forty, apparently—it’s absolutely the wrong time to have a major crush on a man. Especially one who treasures his memories of McKenna as the girl Most Likely to Succeed.

“Pitch-perfect comedic timing, a relatable heroine, and a refreshing sweetness elevate this novel above the sea of modern rom-coms. The rare author who can make me laugh out loud, The Do-Over is Bethany Turner at her best.” —Lauren Layne, New York Times-bestselling author

Another fun book with great lessons!

I admittedly wanted to smack the heroine multiple times during this audiobook. The selfishness and narrow-mindedness was exasperating. Seeing her growth in this book, and how much her family loved her, was inspirational.

I like that this wasn’t a neat and tidy romance. It had its ups and downs, yet was so raw and real.

I love this family and I hope for a sequel perhaps???

Thoroughly Enjoyed!

As the title says, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect getting into it, as this is the first book from this author that I've read, but it was a fun story, had good character development and just made me genuinely happy while listening to it.

Seems like a bad Hallmark movie.

I did t enjoy this book. Even for a novel, it was just too unbelievable to even be entertaining.

Monotone narrator

The story was ok, nothing exceptional, but the narrator was very monotone and I struggled to get through the book because of it

Really good story.

So often romance writers phone it in. The basic formula: A little chemistry and hot sex plus add in the “grand misunderstanding” followed by the HEA. It gets boring for the reader.

Therefore when a romance writer provides the reader with characters who are like-able and actually have a interesting stories, it’s worth my time to reward the author with an actual review.

I enjoyed the storyline where McKenna’s all absorbing career hit some bumps that caused her realistic embarrassment and serious potential loss of her reputation.
She realistically fights through these challenges mostly on her own while fighting a world and maybe herself that says a 40 year old woman is probably never going to find love. She’s never really wanted love until she is reacquainted with an old HS nerd friend who has grown up to be. more than OK. But is a crush worth changing her opinion of love?
I especially enjoyed that this book was absent of sex scenes without being preachy. And the story simply naturally didn’t need sex in order to make you cheer for love and for our heroine.

Wonderful and wholesome

4.5 stars. It’s a clean read, with a happy ending which I value immensely. A beginning storyline of mystery and a few subplots, including a sweet romance - that gradually becomes the main storyline - and a genealogical mystery. All loose ends are tied up in the end, so the reader isn’t left wondering what happened in any plot/story. I took a half a star off because there are some inconsistencies (ie Henry was sitting in an armchair in the first few sentences and then suddenly on the couch instead -without any mention of the move- and with the mention that “an hour later (he) was still on the couch” like he was never in the armchair in the first place). Things like that drive me nuts. Authors and editors should try better to keep things consistent. Aside from the inconsistencies, this was a great wholesome romance that I’d definitely recommend.

What a beautiful story- an instant favorite

I cannot say enough about how I loved this book. My words won’t do it justice. From the beginning, I was in awe of the author’s style, most particularly the humor and beauty of the internal voice of the character bringing me into her world. I don’t think I have ever fully understood and cared about every single side character to this extent in a romcom. I also have never laughed as much or worried so much over where the little pieces of the story might fall for the MC. The romance was so sweet, clean, deep, genuine, and realistically character-driven. But this was more than a romcom. It was so smart, researched, and a love letter to home, family, friends, dreams, and change, I knew it before I got to the ending- that this was going up on the pedestal with my all-time favorites. But the ending…it sealed the deal. Read this book!

Frustrating beyond belief.

I tried and tried and tried to like this story. The main character was so one dimensional that I found myself annoyed every time I turned on the book. I still kept listening, all the way to the end, in the hopes that it would eventually get better. But it never did. I felt only rage or annoyance at the main character’s choices, thought processes and personality.

I do so like books that have a real feel to them..

Though the first part had me wondering where the story was going, the last 2/3 made it worth waiting. I love how real the thought life and conversations are. The family relationship struggles lend credence too. But best of all, I love the quips and flirting between the main characters. The author creates a fine "in love" tension without ever going too far!
