Publisher's Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the master of legal thrillers, a page-turning classic of “suit-and-dagger suspense” (The New York Times): At the top of his class at Harvard Law, Mitch McDeere had his choice of the best firms in America. He made a deadly mistake.

Don’t miss John Grisham’s new book, THE EXCHANGE: AFTER THE FIRM, coming soon!

For a young lawyer on the make, it was an offer Mitch McDeere couldn’t refuse: a position at a law firm where the bucks, billable hours, and benefits are over the top. It’s a dream job for an up-and-comer—if he can overlook the uneasy feeling he gets at the office. Then an FBI investigation into the firm’s connections to the Mafia plunges the straight and narrow attorney into a nightmare of terror and intrigue. With no choice but to pit his wits, ethics, and legal skills against the firm’s deadly secrets—if he hopes to stay alive…

The story is timeless

Even to this day, the plotting with its twists is enough to grab any reader's attention. If there is ever to be any revisions, I would suggest the writer become more familiar with West Indian culture. The lingo the behavior is completely off so much that it could irritate readers and listeners. People in the Caribbean Islands do not say "mon" every time they open their mouths.

The Firm

A bit long winded, but the lawyer the firm thought they could pull the wool over his eyes championed.

Easy listen, good story

It’s been years since I’ve read this book, and forgot how about all the twists and turns the story has. It’s a great listen and I highly recommend it.

Captivating Plot

This book isn't John Grisham's best effort - but his first popular commercial success. The reward for readers is a twisty-turny exploration (dealing with a newly-minted lawyer entrapped by a frighteningly corrupt Law Partnership that offers incredible amounts of money & perks.. and lifethreatening danger). If you've seen the Tom Cruise film treatment, this book is superior. If you haven't, it's a remarkably fresh-feeling thriller (the shifting POVs from 'Mitchell McDeere' to 'Abby McDeere' to the FBI to the bad guys at 'Bendini, Lambert, and Locke' is innovatively handled). There is absolutely zero courtroom drama - don't expect a "typical" Grisham novel - but the intricately plotted "Cat & Mouse" story is great.

Maddeningly, this is one of the weaker performances in reader Scott Brick's catalogue. He is undeniably professional - and clearly interested in the book (actually chuckling a little bit while delivering some of the author's funnier lines, for example) - but reads with his typical snarky tone (which requires listening at 1.15X.. I recommend this anytime you encounter Mr. Brick).. and some genuinely weak Cayman Islander accents.

Altogether, this recording of an early book in Grisham's career (his second book - published in 1991) is worth a solid 8 stars out of 10. The novel doesn't have the polish of subsequent books but a brilliant plot. Can recommend.

[Incidentally, the central 'Mitch' character is a strikingly unlikeable arrogant mercenary. 'The Firm' can leave you wondering why the author expects you to cheer for this guy]

Finally listened to the book

I grew up watching the movie, figured it was time I read the book. It’s really excellent! A bit different in the end than the movie, but I can see why those choices were made and I enjoy both equally.

"If it seems too good to be true..."

When a struggling young lawyer gets every dream he ever had, handed to him, on a silver platter, he should have wondered 'Why'? But Mitch McDeer could only say THANK YOU to all the perks his new employer was handing him. Even down to paying off his hefty student loan, a beautiful new home, with insanely low mortgage and his and her cars.

Not long after starting with his dream job, however, Mitch learns that the 'legal firm' he works for are as dirty as some of their clients. Or worse. This isn't a job you can just leave with a letter of resignation and good references. So Mitch has to find another way of getting away while also blowing the whistle on former employers.

I won't tell you how it was done. Just listen in.

Caribbean accents don't sound like that

Great book. I was annoyed by the awful Caribbean accent. If you can't sound like people from the Cayman Islands, don't even try. I cringed every time I heard it.

Awesome

Loved this book and it’s narration. I’m sure I will be disappointed when I watch the movie but the book will keep you wanting to keep listening.
