About this listen

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect....

For fans of Ruth Ware and Tana French, a shivery, atmospheric, pause-resisting novel of psychological suspense in the tradition of Agatha Christie, in which a group of old college friends are snowed in at a hunting lodge...and murder and mayhem ensue.

All of them are friends. One of them is a killer.

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.

Now, one of them is dead...and another of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?

Long-winded

This book had the potential to be great. However, it was very slow at the beginning and ended too abruptly. The characters of Doug and Heather were unnecessary and I found myself skipping their chapters. This writer could have benefited from a good editor!

Great Read

I enjoyed everything about this book. The story is well written and the various characters are fully fleshed out and believable. I particularly enjoyed the way the narration was done with different actors for each character rather than one person attempting to do different voices. The story is gripping and suspenseful.

Really enjoyed this!

I’ve listened to The Paris Apartment and The Guest List and have enjoyed all three so much! I’m looking forward to Lucy Foley’s next book.

Passed the time

I usually enjoy these books, it just didn’t keep me on my toes. Maybe, it was how the characters were performed. At first I was confused on who each character was for the first few chapters. There are a few side stories that do not seem to fit, could have been left out and it would not have affected the plot.

Compelling ensemble mystery in the Scottish Highlands

Friends who celebrate New Years together annually. A snowstorm. Secrets. And a murder. Not a police procedural just a group of people and a dead body.

Does its job

Very good for formulaic murder mystery, which I personally like. I LOVE Imogen Church. For the better part of the past two years, I have listened to her voice most nights in my headphones, and I haven't experienced insomnia since.

When I wake up in the middle of the night, instead of trying every trick I can think of to make myself fall back asleep, I simply listen to Imogen read murder mysteries. And I love it.

I flip back to the last part of the story I can remember and start again. slowly in my conscious but over and over in my unconscious, I get through the book.

A good murder mystery like this one let's all your other life's worries just melt away. def recommend

Turned my on to Audio Thrillers

I loved how each chapter was a different character, with different voices. it kept me guessing as to who the murderer was, and I as still surprised at the end.
