Story
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Story
A major North American hydroelectric dam is blown up and the largest off-shore oil field in this hemisphere is destroyed in a brutal, coordinated terrorist attack. But there was one factor that the terrorists didn't take into account when they struck the Capitana platform off the coast of Colombia—slaughtering much of the crew and blowing up the platform—and that was the Capitana crew chief Dewey Andreas. Dewey, former Army Ranger and Delta, survives the attack, rescuing as many of his men as possible. But the battle has just begun.

A former Delta Force commander, Brad Taylor proves with this breathtaking debut thriller that Vince Flynn and Brad Thor have company. A collection of top operatives, the Taskforce was commissioned by the highest levels of government, kept secret from the media and even Congress. The best of the Taskforce bunch, Pike Logan knows the greatest threat to American security is one or two idealogues. Unfortunately for them, they’ve just crossed Pike’s path.

Publisher's Summary
In Brad Thor's highest-voltage thriller to date, Scot Harvath must race to locate an ancient secret that has the power to stop militant Islam dead in its tracks.
June, A.D. 632: Deep within the Uranah Valley of Mount Arafat in Mecca, the Prophet Mohammed shares with his closest companions a final and startling revelation. Within days, he is assassinated.
September 1789: U.S. minister to France Thomas Jefferson, charged with forging a truce with the violent Muslim pirates of the Barbary Coast, makes a shocking discovery - one that could forever impact the world's relationship with Islam.
Present day: When a car bomb explodes outside a Parisian café, Navy Seal turned covert Homeland Security Operative Scot Harvath is thrust back into the life he has tried so desperately to leave behind.
Saving the intended victim of the attack, Harvath becomes party to an amazing and perilous race to uncover a secret so powerful that militant Islam could be defeated once and for all without firing another shot, dropping another bomb, or launching another covert action. But there are powerful men who are determined that Mohammed's mysterious final revelation continue to remain hidden forever.
Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "quite possibly the next coming of Robert Ludlum", Brad Thor takes listeners across the globe on a heart-pounding chase in which the stakes are higher than they have ever been.

Another enticing listen
Thor continues to entertain with feasible plots executed in unexpected ways. Reader also very credible although enjoyable not quite as enthralling a voice as other Brad Thor reader …. still a great enticing adventure .

Another Well thought out Book by Thor
I think that the possibility of unwritten passages in the Quran and or the Bible could easily have existed. I believe Brad Thor integrated these possible incredible details to this story very well.

I didn't love this one...
I love the Scot Harvath series, but I only "liked" this one. The story was entertaining, but it was a bit to "DaVinci Code" for my taste. I'm invested into this character and series because of the espionage factor and that was missing a bit here. There were some elements of it, but they felt a bit too forced. The Last Patriot was released in 2008... right in between the release of the movies "The Da Vinci Code" (2006) and "Angles & Demons" (2009). It very much felt like Brad Thor was trying to sprinkle a little Dan Brown into the Scot Harvath world.

Plot had some up's and down's
I'm a big fan of George Guidall. When I saw he was narrating this novel I decided to buy the book. Brad Thor could have improved his plot by spending more time in certain areas. For example, he does a great job setting up his theme of drawing a connection between T. Jefferson and Mohammed. His theme of disarming Islam extremists is unique and interesting. But then he disappoints by having the hero, S. Horvath, seem to be a rank amateur at thwarting a assassin who is hot on his trail by not showing a clue about personal security. Scott is continuously easily found by the assassin as if Scott has painted a bulls-eye on his back. Completely implausible. I loved all the in depth description of modern military gear. Scott, however, is a babe in the wood when it comes to security because it seems like a 15 year old with a personal computer and access to the internet could track him down, walk in on him, with no alarms sounded, and attack him and other top FBI, CIA, and Secret Service agents at will. Also the ending was weak, IMHO, and a lazy set-up to pre-sell his next book.

A Hit (in more ways than one)
Where does The Last Patriot rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is possibly one of the really good books that I have listened to in the past year.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Deep plot but not too difficult too keep up with and filled with twists and turns to keep you interested.
Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?
George Guidall is so versatile. He is great in every part. I might buy a book just because he was narrator.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It was but I never sit and listen to any book. I have them in the car and I never lose my place. In fact, I can't wait to get in the car so I can begin listening again.
Any additional comments?
This was my kind of story with my kind of performance by my kind of performer!

And the ending made me ask, "And, and, and?"
I'm a Brad Thor fan but George Guidall just made the book better. The ending leaves me expecting part II. Harvath should know he'll never retire but now that there is a love interest I hope they go on as a team rather than leaving Harvath a loner. That would naturally push his intensity up notch after notch! And that could be more good reading.
Good listen for me..

Excellent Listen
Would you listen to The Last Patriot again? Why?
Probably not, because I am 75 years old and have too many more books to listen to, Brad Thor is on top of my list.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
George is one of my favorite narrators, along with .Dick Hill Their voice accents make you be that there is someone else narrating. but you know it is them. ,
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Cant do that not enough time but would like to.

Only OK - nteresting concept but not very engaging
What would have made The Last Patriot better?
I would like more plot twists, some additional characters with interesting qualities. There is action in this book, but for some reason, I didn't find it as engaging as other books of this genre. The opening of the book seems inconsequential as it relates to much of the story and that was too bad.
What do you think your next listen will be?
unsure
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
I love listening to George and it was his narration that brought me to this book.
Any additional comments?
I like Vince Flynn's books and they seem to have a bit more action and the characters are more flawed, which brings a dynamic quality to the story telling; but not in all cases.

Lots of anti Muslim rhetoric
The story is ok, if a bit unbelievable. The narrator was great. But throughout the book, the author goes off on rants about Muslims in America that are straight up anti Muslim conspiracy theorist rhetoric.
If the author had skipped the anti Muslim rants (that sounded like they came straight from political right wing pundits), the story itself would have been fine.

Unfortunately the narration just didn’t work for me. I kept on thinking it was Wilford Brimley from the Quaker Oats commercials.

Creative blend of historical fact & fiction
I really enjoyed this one. I especially appreciated the reference to Painter Crow and Sigma Force (which is an excellent series) at the beginning. I've been through a lot of these series now and often thought it would be cool if they somehow teamed up for a book or two. A team of Scot Harvath, Mitch Rapp, Greyson Pierce, Monk Kokalis and crew with Painter Crow, Gary Lawler & Dr. Kennedy would be extremely formidable. Wishful thinking I know.....
