Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Karin Slaughter brings back Will Trent and Sara Linton in this superb and timely thriller full of devious twists, disturbing secrets, and shocking surprises you won't see coming.

A mysterious kidnapping

On a hot summer night, a scientist from the Centers for Disease Control is grabbed by unknown assailants in a shopping center parking lot. Vanished into thin air, the authorities are desperate to save the doctor.

A devastating explosion

One month later, the serenity of a sunny Sunday afternoon is shattered by the boom of a ground-shaking blast - followed by another seconds later. One of Atlanta's busiest and most important neighborhoods - the location of Emory University, two major hospitals, the FBI headquarters, and the CDC - has been bombed.

A diabolical enemy

Medical examiner Sara Linton and her partner, Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to the scene - and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy thousands of innocent lives. When the assailants abduct Sara, Will goes undercover to save her and prevent a massacre - putting his own life on the line for the woman and the country he loves.

Intense!! Karin Slaughter's best!

Karin Slaughter has been on of my favorite authors for 18 years. Every novel is a must read/listen. THE LAST WIDOW is a very special novel even for a novelist with the talent of Karin Slaughter. The publisher's summary sets up this novel perfectly so I will not risk giving away any more of it. But there are some comments that are appropriate. Although this is the Will Trent series, Dr. Sara Linton is co-protagonist. Will is now divorced from his destructive childhood friend Angie. A wedding to Sara seems to be in the near future. Will's partner Faith Mitchell plays a significant role in this novel as does his boss Amanda. Kathleen Early continues to narrate the Will Trent series as well as most of Ms. Slaughter's other novels. Early is superb!

THE LAST WIDOW can be read as a stand alone novel, but it's even better if the other novels in the series are read first.

Current and all too real...

The Invisible Patriot Army. A new group of home grown militants, domestic terrorists who hate everyone who is not a white Christian. In the wake of Charlottesville and the validation the hate groups received it has become more about the acts then the cause.
Add in a bomb expert and some pedophilia and you have the makings for the group that first kidnapped a scientist from the CDC. About a month later Sara Linton is kidnapped and brought to their grassroots compound for reasons she is yet to learn. For anyone unfamiliar with the Grant county series, Sara’s husband was murdered by a member of an Arian group.
Meanwhile Will Trent is working to get into the IPA undercover.
Faith Mitchell is a key player as she puts the pieces of information together before it’s too late, but information comes slowly.
There are many more characters and plans that piggyback on more secretive plans for what could be a terrifying outcome.
Kathleen Early is the voice for this series. She does an outstanding job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Awesome statement

This book is so reflective of the times we’re in. The author does an excellent job of making a spot-on political statement without naming names or calling out individuals and groups. My favorite line: “You can’t argue with people who won’t accept simple truths.” No, no you can’t. This, in itself, is a simple truth that has bewildered me for about three years now. Slaughter’s ability to weave a captivating story using elements of current events is admirable and makes for highly entertaining reading. I’d highly recommend this book.

The Sweetness Of Will vs Jeffrey’s Swagger

Of course the demands of fans for this series has galvanized both author and publisher to add more books.
This new novel is great with its rich dialogue if you have already heard the previous stories. If you are new to the series this story doesn’t give away the mystery of the series so go ahead and enjoy as you will go back and buy all the rest of the novels read by Ms Early.
Publishers summery is spot on so no need to add to it. I do listen at the 1.25x speed to match the action of all mysteries. Give it a try.
New characters or embellished ones have been added to the the LOL Amanda pile of smart mouth comments. Eg Bella so much fun along with Faiths on going great sarcasm.
Karin has humor but you are always awaiting the spoiler alert parts so you may miss it the first time listening. I have found it is best to take my time to really enjoy all the humorous talents of this author. Yup she has got ‘em
Ms Early is the voice of this series so l can only hope she will re record all the books not narrated by her.
I buy all her reads. Do not miss Rachel Gibbons novels. Eg Rescue Me, laugh your head off light romances.
Were my comments of help?

Each book keeps getting better!!

I became obsessed with Karin Slaughter’s books about two years ago and haven’t looked back! She is amazing, every story grabs you and makes you feel the emotions of the characters and this one was no different. I recommend the entire series so you have the full background of the characters but it is not essential to understanding this book. Highly recommend!!!! And Kathleen Early is amazing as always, she is the voice of this series.

Overall it was Okay

I have listened to the entire series and this is my least favorite book. the story line was alright I guess along the lines with current time and events but it didn't focus a whole lot on Will and Sara as the rest of the books. overall it was okay.

I like Karin Slaughter but...

The general theme of the book is good and well-written. I finished it, but fast-forwarded through some of it. Because....

I don’t like some of her characters. What a bumbling baby Will is. And he’s enabled by his partner, the foul-mouthed Faith who can't complete a sentence without the F-bomb, and girlfriend Sarah. Even Amanda, his boss, enables him. When Will comes on, I want to fast forward. I know he’s a fearless agent and he theoretically has dyslexia, but come on, Will, stop mumbling and shuffling. And Sarah, stop enabling him and babying him! She’s in the hands of evil kidnappers and she’s worrying about Will. She has her hands on a phone for only a minute or two and she's so frozen with worry for Will, she can't speak. She always sends him sound bites and emoticons in support of his dyslexia and only manages a weak and trembly "Will?" Boom, phone is gone and she'll never get another chance. Really? And that ex-wife? Will, kick her butt to the curb, make it final, enforce it, and stop letting her wreck your life because you're weak and cursed with past feelings and history!

It’s all very annoying and affects my enjoyment of the book.

SO GOOD but so close to current horrific events

This book is so good down to the last sentence/statement. I started it not long after a mass shooting so I had to wait a bit before I listened again. But then I couldn’t wait any longer —her books are my favorites —and I’m so glad I kept at it. Talk about ripped from the headlines. I kept thinking “amen” to the good characters and their critiques of hatred and how hatred is (or isn’t) covered. I so needed that even though it can be hard to listen to hate speech from bad characters. Despite heaviness, there’s still the humor we adore from Karin Slaughter/her characters. A must-read, just be forewarned re triggers.

I never wanted it to end, I didn’t think Slaughter could get any better, I was WRONG!!!!

This book is extremely fast paced. The story begins literally begins with a “bang”. Within the first 30 minutes there is an abduction two bombs, a car accident, an attempted murderer of a GBI Special Agent as well as mass fatalities. This book is full of excitement and up and downs. Ms. Slaughter wrote another winner. I had pre- ordered this and immediately got to listening to it yesterday. I could not stop. I finished the story and was immediately irritated I blew through it.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who is. If you’re a Will Trent fan than this is certainly for you. If you’re unfamiliar with the series than I suggest beginning with the Grant County series staring Dr. Sarah Linton. Both series eventually intertwine. All are phenomenal and my only criticism is there isn’t another readily available. Definitely with your money or credit.
The narrator is on point and one of the best Audible has to has to offer. A solid 5 Stars all around.

Will Trent is a great character!

But like other books in the series, he’s often overshadowed by his girlfriend, Sarah Linton. I’m not sure if it’s because Will is not a great communicator and Slaughter uses Linton to explain his actions, but there’s never enough Will Trent.
