About this listen

From “one of the hottest horror authors on the planet” (Paste) and writer of the #HorrorBookTok sensation The Troop—a heart-pounding novel of terror about a young woman searching for her missing friend and uncovering a shocking truth.

On a sunny morning in June, Margaret Carpenter wakes up to find a new iPhone on her doorstep. She switches it and is greeted by a text from her best friend, Charity Atwater. The problem is, Charity’s been missing for over a month. Most people in town—even the police—think she’s dead.

Margaret and Charity have been lifelong friends. They share everything, know the most intimate details about each another…except for the destructive secret hidden from them both. A secret that will trigger a chain of events ending in tragedy, bloodshed, and death. And now Charity wants Margaret to know her story—the real story.

In a narrative that takes place over one feverish day, Margaret follows a series of increasingly disquieting breadcrumbs as she forges deeper into the mystery of her best friend—a person she never truly knew at all….

This was a mix of "young adult" fiction, with a side of sci-fi, body horror and lots of bugs. A few parts had the World War Z format involving 'after event' interviews. The bug stuff was interesting before its reveal, with some nice Afterwards the descriptions were a bit too lengthy for my tastes.

We also had two main characters with large internal worlds, resulting in some side appearances by a "The Soprano's" character, and a giant ant. I can see how it was all woven together and respect the author for the plotline efforts. This just wasn't for me.

Not the same punch as "The Troop"

I couldn’t follow this book or get invested in the story. I think it’s because I don’t like gore. If you’re a gore person, you may enjoy the book but I had to give up on it half way through

I just couldn’t get into this one

Nick Cutter has an ability to convey a specific type of nightmare fuel that is as horrific as it is enthralling. he creates characters that are sympathetic but also are pure evil at thr same time. This was yet another skin crawling success.

Young lady has the town all abuzz. Neat it's set in Ontario. Loved the post-story bit with the military guy. Weird sciencey more than horror, one of the more interesting entries if you can stand some gore.
