Story
Holy unanticipated occurrences! It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen to You!, is the just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry - and that Flora will be changed too.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

Stick with Ramona and Henry
What disappointed you about The Ralph S. Mouse Audio Collection?
My son loved the Henry Huggins and Ramona stories, and since he is still very young I was hoping the Mouse and His Motorcycle stories would be even more age appropriate. But these stories lack the charm of those other Beverly Cleary books. The worst thing about them is how much bickering and negativity you hear from the kids and even the mouse. There's a lot of complaints about people and things being "stupid" or "boring." The characters are constantly whining and complaining. The narration doesn't help, as all the characters sound essentially the same, and the female characters sound like the actor is mocking them. By the third book, my son was asking me to turn it off.
Would you be willing to try another one of B.D. Wong’s performances?
No. All the voices sound alike, and the female voices are particularly bad.

Collections set up terribly- bad deal
It seems like a good deal to get all the books at once, but it's not if you want to do anything but listen to them all in a chosen order sequentially- there's no way to go to what book you want or tell what chapter to go back to- it's just like 45 unlabeled chapters of all the books together. Ramona Quimby series was manageable because a user posted the chapters for everyone, but without that help these Audible "collections" are not a good deal for most parents.

These stories are great, the narration is less so.
The narrator chose to use some rather strange accents and voices for characters meant to be residing in the mountains of California. It's a shame. Had he used better voices for the characters I would have enjoyed it more. The books in this series are great though! For now, this is a better book to read than listen to.

Fun!
Where does The Ralph S. Mouse Audio Collection rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The Ralph S. Mouse Audio Collection is a great fun collection. It ranks with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for quality amongst children's books.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Of course my favorite character was Ralph the mouse. His mood and temper was affected by circumstances, but he was able to learn. And I love the imagination that both the author and the mouse were able to play.
Which character – as performed by B.D. Wong – was your favorite?
He did extremely well with all characters. O
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No
Any additional comments?
My only complaint is that the books were played out of order. _Runaway Ralph_ should have been BEFORE _Ralph S. Mouse_. The motorcycle, after all, is destroyed in _Ralph S. Mouse_, but it's a vital part of _Runaway Ralph_.

B.D. Wong is an American Treasure
My kids already listened to Neil Patrick Harris’s Henry Huggins and Stocker Channing’s Ramona Quimby and they are loving B.D. Wong’s Ralph. If these three collections were on vinyl they would be worn out records by now. I particularly love the diversity of the voices in the Ralph series, especially the women, who sound like working class people and people of color - so familiar and relatable. Thank you for these productive, off of screen hours for my twin 5 year olds. There is some name calling, teasing, and misogyny but we use it as an opportunity to talk about these issues in a productive way before they arise in school, etc. so they are better equipped to deal with them and now I hear “they used to think boys were better than girls, but that’s not true” and “that’s not nice, Ramona - But Ramona is Grandpa’s age and they didn’t know about how bad teasing and bullying was back then. People are always learning!”
