Publisher's Summary

Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

Awesome performance and voice acting

I listened to the first book on a whim and instantly got sucked in by the writing and the performance. The narrator's do a great job! if you liked the first book, you will like this one too.

Engaging Tale from a Dark Future

I very much enjoyed the narration throughout but some parts of the story somewhat fell flat for me. Cain's humour mixed with the grimdark setting is fun and interesting.

Ciaphas Cain Novels make Amazing Audiobooks

While I love reading more than listening usually, Cain novels work better as audiobooks. The fact that there are multiple narrators in the actual book is much better illustrated by multiple narrators in the audiobook. The books themselves are already great. The audiobooks are absolutely stellar.

I enjoyed this one immensely. after caves of ice I was a little bored and thought it was lack luster. this however was fantastic. entertaining without a doubt.
sorry I'm not great with words.
so to sum it up if you like commissars stories this is a good one will listen to again.

Commisar Cain brings another tale of adventure.

Easy to listen to just like the first one. Cain retains his personality with the perfect narrator.

Narrator’s audio outtakes literally left in

Good book but there are a few places where you can hear the narrator mess up on his lines a few times and try again. Really jarring and kind of broke the immersion so hopefully they push an update to fix this.

Besides that though, this is classic Ciaphas Cain. My one complaint about the story is it kinda makes chaos marines seem a bit easier to kill than one would expect but that’s just a minor nitpick.

Another great addition to the series

The action was top notch, as usual.
The story line was interesting, a lot of plot points get recycled from previous entries.
The performance was what really made this another level. Bringing in as much talent as they have, really enhanced the experience

Hero of the Imperium

I love Cain and his band of Valhallans. The presence of Slaanesh cultists was pretty neat to witness as they seldom appear in novels.

Some issues fixed, some new ones to resolve

I like how they went back and added additional monologues into the audiobook - I imagine these were in the original book but didn’t make first cut for some reason. The narrator’s outtake that the original version of the audiobook had left in has been removed, but there’s a new problem in that starting somewhere between chapters six and seven the actual audiobook chapters desynchronize with where they’re supposed to be in the book, so you’ve got a chapter starting in the middle of a sentence instead of the narrator saying ‘Chapter whatever’. Also, the point where Inquisitor Veil’s monologue overlaps with another person’s monologue is still present. All in all, better, but they’ve added a problem that wasn’t there before, so still have a ways to go.

One of my favorite series.

Love me some Amberly and Sula interludes.

Another great Cain entry with the same familiar voices. Book 4 is due on the 27th and I've already got it pre-ordered.

Is there a way to have the next Cain faster?

excellent book simply, the story is fun with enough tension to keep you listening and have enough humour to make you laugh
