Publisher's Summary

About the audiobook:

The Worldship Humility is the start of The Code trilogy, written exclusively for audio by sci-fi author R. R. Haywood. Narrator Colin Morgan brings the colourful characters and treacherous escapades of The Worldship Humility to life, a gripping space adventure which will appeal to fans of Ready Player One, Bladerunner and Haywood’s previous best-selling works, Extracted and The Undead

Summary:

It’s been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors set off after planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor.

On the Worldship Humility, Sam, an Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters.

Petty thief Yasmine Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored. Growing up in the Elfors, the lawless lower levels of the ship, has seen her surrounded by violence and squalor since birth, and now she wants out. She wants to escape to the luxury of the Ab-Spa on top of WS Abstinence, where they eat real food instead of rats and synth cubes.

Meanwhile, the sleek-hulled, unmanned Gagarin has come back from punching out ahead of the fleet in the ever-continuing search for a new home. Nearly all hope is lost that a new planet will ever be found, until the Gagarin returns with a code of information that suggests a habitable planet has been found. This news should be shared with the whole fleet, but a few rogue captains want to keep the information to themselves and colonise the new planet.

When Yasmine inadvertently steals the code, she and Sam become caught up in a dangerous game of murder, corruption, political wrangling and...porridge, with sex-addicted Detective Zhang Woo hot on their heels, his own life at risk if he fails to get the code back.

About the author:

R. R. Haywood is the author of Amazon UK’s number one horror series The Undead, which propelled him into the top 20 best-selling Amazon authors in the UK. Haywood is a Washington Post best-selling author and both the Undead series and the Extracted trilogy are Audible best sellers.

Colin Morgan as a narrator is not for me.

I just started to listen to the book and I simply can't continue, the story might be ok but I just can't stand the narration by Colin Morgan, his style is simply incompatible with me.

One if the most enjoyable books I have read this year!!! Superb!!

Firstly, the story is gripping right off the bat. The character growth is paced perfectly urging you to continue for a thirst to know more with a dialogue to match. His world comes to life as realistic and within the grasp of possible and so completely relatable and truly intriguing.

Secondly, the outstanding performance of Colin Morgan supersedes any of the other British narrators I have listened to to date (I have listened to over 40 sci-fi books in 1 1/2 years). His diverse and accurate depiction of the characters almost makes you forget that they are all performed by him, alone. I will, definitely, research more books he has narrated. He has made an excellent story, superlative Well done Mr Morgan!

All around excellent on all counts except I am deeply disappointed that this is the only work that he had completed and sincerely wish for more.

Fantastic book, terrible synopsis

Listening to this book is a pretty strange experience after you've read Audible's synopsis. It sounds like the story starts with the theft of the code, when actually the whole book leads up to that. Somehow they managed to spoil the whole book in that one little paragraph, while also entirely misrepresenting it.

Having said that! This is a fantastic book, with very good world building, delightful protagonists, despicable antagonists, and plenty of grey in between. The story is fun and exciting, even if you already know what's going to happen. Morgan's narration brings the story and characters to life. Trigger warning for sexual violence, but it's no Game of Thrones or anything.

I'm very much looking forward to the sequel, which I plan to download without reading the synopsis this time. In the meantime, I'm going to check out Haywood's previous novels.

Lots of Fun

This isn't my usual subject but I got it for Colin Morgan and he didn't disappoint. All those characters and all those accents .. it was fantastic. His natural Northern Irish accent has such a sprightly lilt to it that it kind of injects a hint of humour to the narration that keeps it all lively and fun to listen to. There was a lot going on but the story moved right along and wasn't hard to follow .. in fact, it moved so quickly, I was a bit taken aback when it ended with no kind of resolution. Obviously there are more books to come so, hopefully, we can get more information on what happened to Janey and Sven and all the people left behind on the Humility as well as following the exploits of Sam and Yasmine. If Colin Morgan performs them, I can hardly wait.

Good story, but just can't get into it

Three hours into this story and I'm not itching to get back to it. It's got some great characters, and some very interesting concepts. The Worldship world is engaging enough, but doesn't have a notable hook - because of the scale of the armada, the whole story could just as easily take place on a planet. All in all it's worth a look. I just can't get past the writing. This was written specifically for audio - which does not lend well to the reader being able to go back and check for details that might have been missed: who is who, who said what, wait, what happened there. So the writing has to be clear and obvious. And it isn't, for me. But my deal breaker is the dialogue - endless threads of blah blah he said blah blah she said. I couldn't follow what was being said by whom because I was so distracted waiting, begging for someone to exclaim for a change. Or whisper or state or offer or comment. If I had to hear the word 'said' one more time I was going to toss it. (My apologies if this wasn't bothering you, and if it's now all you can hear...) I'll likely go back and finish this, only because I typically can't not. I'll edit this if it changes my mind, but 9 or so chapters in, it's all pretty bland.

I enjoyed it. But it's not for kids

They story's okay, the characters a bit exaggerated.
More violence and sexual references than I'd prefer.

From a science and technical point of view, the few hints about the the backstory and the major challenges that Humanity has to overcome for this story to work were a little bit farfetched. I don't think this detracted from the story though.
