Story
Everyone knows a guy like Jared: the burnout kid in high school who sells weed cookies and has a scary mom who's often wasted and wielding some kind of weapon. Jared does smoke and drink too much, and he does make the best cookies in town, and his mom is a mess, but he's also a kid who has an immense capacity for compassion and an impulse to watch over people more than twice his age, and he can't rely on anyone for consistent love and support, except for his flatulent pit bull, Baby Killer (he calls her Baby) - and now she's dead.

Years ago, when plagues and natural disasters killed millions of people, much of the world stopped dreaming. Without dreams, people are haunted, sick, mad, unable to rebuild. There is one question Canadians have asked Jody Wilson-Raybould more than any other: What can I do to help advance reconciliation? This has been true from her time as a leader of British Columbia’s First Nations, as a Member of Parliament, as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, within business communities, and when having conversations with people. Whether speaking as individuals, communities, organizations, or governments, people want to take concrete and tangible action that will make real change. Story
On August 17, 2014, the body of 15-year old runaway Tina Fontaine was found in Winnipeg's Red River. It was wrapped in material and weighted down with rocks. Red River Girl is a gripping account of that murder investigation and the unusual police detective who pursued the killer with every legal means at his disposal. The audiobook, like the movie Spotlight, chronicles the behind-the-scenes stages of a lengthy and meticulously planned investigation. It reveals characters and social tensions that bring vivid life to a story that made national headlines.

Publisher's Summary
Following the Scotiabank Giller Prize-shortlisted Son of a Trickster comes Trickster Drift, the second book in Eden Robinson's captivating Trickster trilogy.
In an effort to keep all forms of magic at bay, Jared, 17, has quit drugs and drinking. But his troubles are not over: now he's being stalked by David, his mom's ex - a preppy, khaki-wearing psycho with a proclivity for rib-breaking. And his mother, Maggie, a living, breathing badass as well as a witch, can't protect him like she used to because he's moved away from Kitimat to Vancouver for school.
Even though he's got a year of sobriety under his belt (no thanks to his enabling, ever-partying mom), Jared also struggles with the temptation of drinking. And he's got to get his grades up, find a job that doesn't involve weed cookies, and somehow live peacefully with his Aunt Mave, who has been estranged from the family ever since she tried to "rescue" him as a baby from his mother. An indigenous activist and writer, Mave smothers him with pet names and hugs, but she is blind to the real dangers that lurk around them - the spirits and supernatural activity that fill her apartment.
As the son of a Trickster, Jared is a magnet for magic, whether he hates it or not - he sees ghosts, he sees the monster moving underneath his Aunt Georgina's skin, he sees the creature that comes out of his bedroom wall and creepily wants to suck his toes. He also still hears the Trickster in his head, and other voices too. When the David situation becomes a crisis, Jared can't ignore his true nature any longer.

PLEASE READ THESE BOOKS!!!
I liked this even better than book 1. Jared is going through some really dark and difficult things, but his humour and sarcasm help make it easier for you to read about it. I love this kid, you can't help but root for him.

An Improvement on the First Entry
New scenes and new characters meant that the supernatural elements found at the end of the first novel do not take centre stage until near the end of this book. That being said though, the overall story was great. What kept me from giving it 5 stars is that it took so long to get back into the Trickster part of the story, and that Eden Robinson has a habit of dumping information in a way that breaks up the story for me. For example, when describing the geography of Vancouver, instead of having Jared discover parts of the city during the story she has a whole chapter where the narrator literally describes the layout of the city; it took me right out of the narrative. One other thing that bothered me was the overuse of the word “said.” For example, a conversation between multiple characters might go like this:
“Get out,” Jared said.
“Make me,” Kota said.
“Settle down!” Hank said
“Boys,” Mavis said.
Otherwise, the story and characters captured my attention.
Jason Ryll did a much better job with his narration in this book. I was impressed by his level of improvement.

I didn’t even know books could be this good… 🤩
First couple chapters were a bit slow, but when it started going, it was amazing. I’m hooked. It’s so easy to picture what’s going on too. Honestly it one of my favourite series. I could read this over and over. It’s a good idea to read the first one though. Might get confusing.

Imaginative story taking place in East Van
I could not stop listening. I love how the author weaves science, Indigenous storytelling and magic together all in the context of East Vancouver. The characters are complicated as real people are, and events are not predictable: my favorite combo! For the narrator, I was not confident in some of his pronunciations and sometimes it was very distracting. For example, there is a character that regularly says what I believe was meant to be "maman" (mom in French) but it was so strongly mispronounced, I'm not even sure that's what he was trying to say. All in all,a very enjoyable listen. Make sure to listen to the prior book in the series first!
