Story
Caitlyn Sullivan had come from a long line of Hollywood royalty, stretching back to her Irish immigrant great-grandfather. At nine, she was already a star - yet still an innocent child who loved to play hide-and-seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared. Some may have considered her a pampered princess, but Cate was in fact a smart, scrappy fighter, and she managed to escape her abductors. Callan Cooper was shocked to find the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his house.

Story
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Little else in life is as dangerous as fire jumping. Flying past towering pillars of smoke, parachuting down to the edge of an all-consuming blaze, shoveling and sawing for hours upon hours, days at a time, all to hold the line and push back against the raw power of Mother Nature. But there’s also little else as thrilling - at least to Rowan Tripp. The Missoula smoke jumpers are one of the most exclusive firefighting squads in the nation, and the job is in Rowan’s blood: her father is a legend in the field. She’s been fighting fires since her eighteenth birthday.

Publisher's Summary
For both Zane and Darby, their small-town roots hold a terrible secret. Now, decades later, they've come together to build a new life. But will the past set them free or pull them under? Find out in Under Currents from number-one New York Times best-selling author Nora Roberts.
Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Strangers and even Zane’s own aunt across the lake see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet recitals and baseball games. Only Zane and his sister know the truth, until one brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes for college without a thought of looking back....
Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and people that mean so much to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful town, he meets a gifted landscape artist named Darby, who is on the run from ghosts of her own.
Together, they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past, and stand up for the ones they love.

Wow great fun..
Loved it. Great story. Wonderful narrator. Takes you on quite the ride.
Nora Roberts never disappoints but this one is particularly good. Nora Roberts is one of my favourite authors and this book is one of the reasons why. A combination of romance and a spotlight on abuse that works perfectly. one to life and does It so skillfully you are simply lost in the sound of her voice..

Nora Roberts wrote this?
My sister and I read this book at about the same time. Neither of us could believe it was a Nora Roberts’ product. Both of us have read many of her books and, we agreed, this was our least favorite. The book was predictable, lacked substance and did not flow well. There was too much “ coincidence,” to be believable. Also we agreed that it might have been better as three short stories since the transitions were either abrupt or clumsy. Not her best but we will probably read her next book hoping this is not a pattern.
A note to the author: We grew up in the Deep South and neither of us have ever met a southern teacher who lacked noun/ verb agreement skills as did the one in this book. Southern is not not a synonym for ignorant.

Huge Nora Roberts fan
I love all of Nora’s romantic suspense books. Every time I think she can’t top her previous book, she manages to surprise me again! I cried at the beginning of this book for Zack and his sister. My heart went out to them and broke many times over. After that, I started cheering them on! This author manages to tug at your heart strings and make you want to know more and more about her characters in every book! As always, her characters were well rounded and could easily be related to by most anyone. You didn’t have to go through child abuse to feel the pain and the sorrow for Zack and his sister. I totally recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romantic suspense with a great ending.

Eh
Under Currents is a crazy quilt of Roberts motifs which were more enjoyable in other books. I loved Zane’s story for the part he, Bree, Lee, and Emily played. The modern romantic suspense part, however, didn’t hold my attention. I didn’t feel the romance and the suspense kept getting more and more ridiculous. Skip this one and get The Witness or Obsession.

Fairytale
I struggled to finish. The plot was very predictable. I knew the ending back at chapter 25 and only finished the book to confirm what I already knew. I found the casual profanity distracting. A good string of expletives when a person is enraged is to be expected, but the use of casual cussing was too much for me.
The characters were too one dimensional. The protagonists were pure and flawless while the villains were pure evil.
Since the author chose to build the plot and theme around domestic abuse , the responses by the victims should have been more realistic instead of so altruistic.
The plot reminded me of an adult fairytale.

Don’t waste your time
Standard Nora Roberts romance and pseudo thriller. The protagonists are likeable and overly sweet. The bad guys are one dimensional and totally ugly. The consistent theme throughout this disjointed story is domestic abuse ramped up to a ridiculous pitch. Skip this one and look for better writing. The narration was excellent, too bad the story wasn’t!

Lazy and Predictable
Let me start out by that Nora Robert's is an author that I adore. I will automatically purchase anything that she publishes. Unfortunately, this book was not up to her normal high standards. The book has multiple story lines that are smashed together far too quickly. It makes for lazy writing and a predictable story.

Would have been a 5 but....
I really enjoyed this story . Darby
made you want to be her and Zane is every girl's dream.
However, it goes sideways because the fact that no one suspected the culprit is simply not believable. I cannot be specific because I want others to read and enjoy the story. I am just disappointed that the author paints a picture of strong, intelligent characters on one hand and then makes them deaf, fumb and blind in the other. I saw the ending coming from a mile away. Editors- how did you let this happen. Story redeemed by true love and happily ever after which will win me over every time.

Enough already!!
I have read most of Nora Roberts books and I am a fan. However, by the time this book came to an end i was kind of over it all. I mean how many times do they need to be beaten, attacked, beaten again and again. This one felt a bit contrived and redundant. I'm glad it's over.

This was so awful
The narrator was very good. The story was very bad. Cavity causing , nauseating, the king of all predictable and just overall weak and Incredibly long. I can't remember when I was so disappointed in a book. Anything redeeming would be the spotlight on abuse and what signs to look for.
