Story
When the star system of Legatus was preparing to secede from the Protectorate of the Mage-King of Mars, it was the secret agents of the Legatan Military Intelligence Directorate that laid the groundwork and fought the covert war to make it happen. Now, as the open conflict draws to a bloody stalemate, LMID has been broken. Their leader is dead, murdered by agents of the Republic they helped birth. Their surviving agents have scattered, following a final protocol that orders them to defect to the Protectorate. An old friend brings all of this to Damien Montgomery.

Story
As the celebration of the victory at Legatus cools, a shuttle accident claims the lives of the Mage-King of Mars and his heir. The Crown and the Mountain fall to the Mage-King’s daughter, 16-year-old Kiera Alexander. She recalls Damien Montgomery, her father’s First Hand, to stand as her Lord Regent. The pair are unprepared to govern but are thrust into the heart of Protectorate politics. Damien is grimly certain of one thing: when it comes to the deaths of Kings, he doesn’t believe in accidents.

Story
An existence spent being forced to kill others to satiate a Monster. Where the only thing to look forward to was the blessed, if brief, period of time between paying that bribe. Except that very same Monster is and isn’t Rene. It just happened to live inside his own mind and force him to do what it wanted. Rather than being an actual Monster. That was Rene’s entire life until a fateful day changed that. A day that the career as a hitman for hire built on the Monster’s needs will end. Where Rene will be forced to atone for his actions. To be held accountable and judged.

Excellent.. but that Narrator..
This third book in a most-enjoyable series is much improved over the first two offerings. Glynn Stewart incorporates much more character development than in the previous efforts.. which were fun but strikingly superficial. This one has a plot that includes political manipulation/diplomacy, secretive treason, interstellar conflict/war mongering, and crises of allegiance.. while still delivering elements of an action-filled plot (the balance between Space Opera world-building and Saturday Morning Serial adventure is better approximated in this novel). It works.
[Note: This book, while great, has some problems: Stewart tries introducing strong Mystery elements (although he's not very good at it); and inexplicably tries his hand at a Rekindled Romance plotline (again largely unsuccessfully). Finally, the dénouement is unnecessary and far too long - the novel essentially ends at Chapter 35 but goes on for another 75 minutes].
Still, the end result is a novel that's the best in the series so far - it's eminently satisfying.
Unfortunately, Jeffrey Kafer gives a terrible reading performance. His reading voice is clear and easy to listen to.. but volume modulation is a genuine issue: Kafer delivers conversational dialogue at twice the volume of the rest of the text - which he rushes ("WHY DID YOU DO THAT?"..damienasked.." THE MAGE-KING WILL NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT"..heintimated.."WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?"..sheretorted.."THE ATTACKS"..herbodyguardinterjected..)
It's laughable when you notice it - but I had to point it out. Sorry about that.
Furthermore, Kafer's pacing is terrible again (I had to increase the playback speed to 1.25X to get a tolerable rate).
And finally, he delivers the text in this book with far too much seriousness - like his kids' lives depend on every word (in a *SciFi* story).
Altogether, despite disappointing narration (you may have noticed that I'm somewhat nitpicky), 'Voice of Mars' is an extremely entertaining offering that rates 8/10 stars. On to Book 4..

Worthy but a bit repetitive
I've been waiting for many months and was thrilled when I saw it finally show up in Audible.com. I wasn't disappointed and generally enjoyed the book but I was hoping for something less predictable. There was the usual encounters with other mages challenging Damien's abilities and authority and the subsequent near death encounters along with the political intrigue along the way but most of the characters, including Damien, seemed less interesting than in the previous books. Even the main antagonist was simple to determine very early on.
With that said, the writing was still very fluid and the narration still well recited (except for a nit with Damien sounding demanding and slightly arrogant even when he intended his declarations are meant to sound soft.)

A solid adventure and mystery
I wish audible gave us more granularity than only 5 stars. I liked Voice of Mars more than the 4 star rating I gave the prior Hand of Mars, but still don't feel like it deserves to be in the same 5 star category as my most favorite books. The ongoing mystery of who is behind the ship attacks holds together the overall story between the action better than the more uneven pacing of the prior book. The intensity is down a bit here, but is much more consistent.
The only criticism I have is that nothing truly great stands out. This is just a good enjoyable listen and well worth your credit.
