Publisher's Summary

Panic snuck up on Brian Johnson while he was out with his son, and it clung to him on his desperate drive home. Feeling almost outside of himself, his family called 911. He was spiraling into darkness. Waiting for the ambulance to arrive, unsure of what was happening, he gathered his family around him and asked them to pray for him. Then he said these pivotal words, “This is when God becomes real.” In his first book, Brian shares how the panic and anxiety of his early life - panic he’d thought he’d beaten - came back to haunt him. After experiencing debilitating anxiety attacks from the age of seven into his early adult years, Brian learned how worship ushered in the presence of God and pushed the panic away.

Now in his mid-30s and believing himself free, Brian had a vision for worship in the church, built a successful music label with his wife, and wrote award-winning songs and albums. He was at the height of his success, and from all appearances, things were better than ever. But in the midst of that success, the ghost of his childhood anxiety returned, stronger than ever, and it pulled Brian into a downward spiral of chaos and darkness.

In the year that would follow, Brian came to experience the ultimate power of surrendering the panic and chaos to God. Whether or not you’ve struggled with panic and anxiety, you’ve found yourself in pain, asking God for relief. In When God Becomes Real, Brian shares his vulnerable story of overcoming panic and anxiety. Discover how you might find God, even in your darkest hour.

Couldn't put it down - incredible

Brian Johnson's story is inspiring. From an intern to the leader of Bethel Music, Brian shares his battle with panic and fear and how he trusted Jesus to help him overcome. This book was impossible to put down after I started reading it. I thank Brian for his vulnerability and insight into ministry, leadership and life.

A raw and authentic accounting of a collapse

Brian Johnson was tethered to God and yet he broke. He expresses a journey of pain that resulted in restoration in spite of the pain he and his family and his community experiences with him. He kept it real and authentic. Recommended for listen for the faith and non-faith community.

Christians need to hear this

Brian is bold and transparent in this book. Many who struggle with anxiety feel a shame that says, “I should be leaning on God for peace but apparently I am not doing a good enough job because I’m having anxiety”. And, “Anxiety is a worldly problem that christians shouldn’t experience. The church will judge me.”
However, Brian shows in this book how God brought him through an even deeper relationship with Him through the darkness.
God is good.

God's AMAZING GRACE.

This is very powerful, open and raw. I totally appreciate how candid Brian is about his life. Willing to be vulnerable so that others too can be healed. Best of all to hear this spoken from the lips and heart of the person who experienced it.

Truth is written here.

It amazed me how much Brian's experiences related to mine. The panic and fear as a child, the whisper spoken of homosexuality, and the weight of not dealing with misunderstandings and hurt.

Honestly, it revealed to me that the enemy really has no new tricks up his sleeves. He uses the same tactics in different ways to destroy God's children.

But God... He has infinite number of ways to save us.

Thank you, Brian, for sharing your personal story. It was incredibly encouraging and strengthening.

This was so gripping and well read. I never wanted to pause from it!

Finding Freedom

What a beautiful vulnerable book. Brian describes the horrors of anxiety so well. His honestly helps to break the shame and hopelessness of fear. God is good through thick and thin. Highly recommend to anyone who struggles with anxiety and or knows those who do. “Although God didn’t bring on the panic...” thank you for mentioning this!!
