THE INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

A Good Housekeeping "Book We're Most Looking Forward To" * An Independent Today "Best Fiction Books to Read" * A GQ Magazine (UK) "Best Book of 2024" * A Harper’s Bazaar (UK) "Best Novels to Read" * A Daily Record "Best Novel"

"Captivating [and] flawless...An affectingly hard-won romance. [Michael is] a sturdy and slyly amusing authority figure, … flailing amid the debris of a loving marriage gone sour. Marnie is a compulsively witty, winningly cranky near-agoraphobe...Both protagonists are prickly, smart and desperately yearning, but utterly guarded for understandably good reasons. Nicholls builds his own erotic and at times wrenchingly emotional suspense as the would-be lovers reveal past mishaps and surrendered dreams... As in the best romances, we cherish Michael’s and Marnie’s difficult personalities, and relish the unlikely process that might bring them together. The novel is sharp-tongued and irresistible."New York Times Book Review

"I finished this novel in two breathless sittings, as invested in its outcome as I would be in the happiness of a friend. This is the magic of You Are Here: warm, generous and funny, it invites readers into the world of Marnie and Michael with the promise that everyone is welcome, and that choosing happiness and being courageous in any small way we can is always possible. I loved this book."—Kaliane Bradley, author of The Ministry of Time

From the internationally bestselling and Booker Prize-longlisted author of One Day, one of the most enduring love stories of its generation, comes an uplifting and unputdownable love story about second chances.

Sometimes you need to get lost to find your way . . .

Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house.

Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.

When a persistent mutual friend and some very unpredictable weather conspire to toss Michael and Marnie together on the most epic of ten-day hikes, neither of them can think of anything worse. Until, of course, they discover exactly what they’ve been looking for.

Michael and Marnie are on the precipice of a bright future . . . if they can survive the journey.

A hilarious, hopeful, and heartwarming love story—the novel beloved New York Times bestselling author David Nicholls calls “my funniest book yet”—You Are Here is a bittersweet and hopeful story of first encounters, second chances, and finding the way home.

Editorial Review

When the journey is the destination
In classic David Nicholls style, his new sure-to-be-bestseller deftly builds rich character and connection through conversation, an approach that's absolutely perfect for audio. Performed in alternating-ish chapters by the amazing Lydia Leonard and Lee Ingleby, You Are Here provides the listener a real fly-on-the-wall effect (or perhaps in this case, fly-on-the-rucksack). What differentiates this one from some of Nicholls's other hits, and especially One Day, is the vivid, reeling moment of midlife loneliness that the two protagonists, Marnie and Michael, find themselves mired in – a state remarkably relatable to anyone of a certain age, even the most touched out, partnered parent. Organized by geography, the stretch of land ahead paves the way for the mental meanderings that come with walking. You come to know – and care for – these characters deeply, and I daresay you'll be as sorry as I was when these two finally reach their destination. —Emily C., Audible Editor

I particularly enjoyed how the author depicted the characters. Their interactions and words seemed genuine and realistic. The narrators were also amazing.

I enjoyed this very much. I will be trying out other titles. It was witty, and interesting, and so very well read.

It is a great story to follow, hopeful for singles out there. It shows that life is not always perfect but that happiness can be found in little things. Great narrator.

A good story about staying in the moment

Rarely do I laugh out loud listening to novels, but I did with this one. I enjoyed it so much that I've just looked through the author's other books (the highest praise) and chosen Sweet Sorrow, which seems to have the same wit and a similarly attractive narrator (another key to enjoyment). There is nothing like being delighted by words, read or spoken!

This is the first time I’ve listened to a book from start to finish in one go. The story was so engaging and thoughtful and the characters very real - I got so invested in their relationship that I couldn’t stop listening until I knew what happened. I loved it. Great narration as well.

Wonderful

As someone who has always wanted to hike the 10-day coast-to-coast walk from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, I was caught by this book! Add two 40-ish single people, both nursing old hurts, both seemingly “checked out” of life, and I was hooked.

There’s something about walking that is very healing. Deep conversation and great insights always seem to happen; maybe it has something to do with the forward motion of movement. In any case, David Nicholls’ YOU ARE HERE combined all that. It’s a novel about falling down, getting back up, opening your heart, and becoming your authentic self.

The love story was gorgeous—a slow burn that felt entirely believable, sweet, and oh-so-real. I loved this book (and now I’m even more keen to hike this classic English walk!)

The narration was absolutely fantastic!
