Disgusted by the senseless gentrification happening in low income areas across the US, it’s ironic that our impact as immigrants to Mexico is also viewed as gentrification by some in Mexico. The historical Spanish colonization and gentrification in Mexico is deep seated and affects low income nationals, but also carries hidden traces of indigenous Mexican culture when you peel away the surface layers. Mexicans have learned to hold on to their culture despite the power of their invaders to push out low income locals.
