  • Antz (1998) & A Bug's Life (1998)
    Mar 31 2024

When Pixar released Toy Story in 1995, it forever changed the approach movie studios took toward animation. Whatever came next was going to have some big steps to follow and several studios decided to throw their hats into the ring, including DreamWorks.

A Bug's Life was Pixar's follow-up, while Antz was the debut release from DreamWorks Animation Studio. They had similar story lines and similar characters, but also included more subtle (and not so subtle) adult themes for the parents in the audience.

Avery Chen - Kyle's lifelong friend and fellow movie traveler - joins the conversation and both he and Kyle bring the childhood perspective, as both saw it as pre-teens, whereas Jim & Lori were already adults when they were first released in 1998.

  • The Lion King (1994) & The Northman (2022)
    Mar 17 2024
Vengeance is a cultural and literary trope going back to the beginning of the arts. Many of the films, books and TV shows of today use Shakespeare as source material but even The Bard took inspiration from the lore of his time.

One such source was the work of Saxo Grammaticus, whose Gesta Danorum indirectly inspired Hamlet. The Northman liberally quotes from the original Amleth, where The Lion King uses Shakespeare as a starting point. This episode of The GMR reviews their exploration of vengeance as a dramatic hinge upon which to base their stories.

The Lion King, being a Disney animated feature, is a much tamer and family-friendly telling of the same essential story as The Northman, but both films are exciting and sometimes melancholy explorations of family, justice and revenge.

  • Jaws (1975) & Rocky (1976)
    Mar 3 2024

Some movies can be watched over and over again. We all have them - the reliable, rainy day favorite that you catch when flipping channels and can't help but stop to watch. The movies on today's GMR are probably on many peoples' "must watch" lists, as they are for us.

Surprisingly, Kyle had never actually sat down and watched Jaws! This made for some surprising insights as it feels like that's the most watched movie of all-time. Certainly for Jim - he's always listed it as his favorite movie as it's the first one he remembers seeing. Jim & Lori have watched all or parts of both movies throughout their marriage but, having recently re-watched both of these old warhorses, found that they both still have much to share.

  • Castle In The Sky (1986) & Spirited Away (2001)
    Feb 18 2024

We would expect that most people when they think of animated movies, are thinking of Snow White or The Little Mermaid. However, starting in the 1980s, a whole new generation of filmmakers out of Japan started Studio Ghibli. The product coming from Studio Ghibli started a revolution of sorts in the animated world and its effects are felt throughout the mainstream of cinema today.

Kyle brought today's film suggestions to Jim & Lori, neither of whom had ever seen anime before and we believe that this episode of The GMR will serve as an enjoyable listen for fans as well as great introduction for others who have not yet been enticed into these cinematic adventures!

  • My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2003) & Moonstruck (1987)
    Feb 4 2024

As Lori & Jim approach their 20th anniversary, the meaning of love has a special pertinence in their lives. For Valentine's Day, the GMR crew thought it would be appropriate to tackle the Romantic Comedy genre with two classics bound to set hearts aflutter.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is an obvious choice (and has a recent sequel to boot) but Kyle heartily recommends the large family dynamic. Moonstruck has numerous funny scenes but Jim argues that the passion boiling over is what gives it soul.

  • Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) & A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
    Jan 21 2024

When thinking about comedies, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and A Fish Called Wanda are definitely near the top of any movie fan's list. But, if you were to describe the plots to someone who never saw either of these films, it would seem hard to believe they were intended to be funny!

Both films explore the comedic possibilities from the other side of the tracks: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels follows the adventure of two competing con artists attempting to pull a fast one on a seemingly innocent tourist, while A Fish Called Wanda follows the exploits of a team of incompetent jewel thieves. Viewers will find themselves laughing themselves silly over murder, violence and infidelity, and the GMR crew digs deep into why that is!

  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) & Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan (1982)
    Jan 7 2024

To start the second season of the Generations Movie Review podcast, Kyle, Jim & Lori welcome Uncle Mike as a guest host and go deep into the first two films of the epic cult TV series-turned-epic movie series.

The Motion Picture and The Wrath Of Khan relate the tenets of existence and friendship – who are we and are why are we here? Bottom line is that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few! A.I., warp speed and chastity vows are just some of the subjects covered.

  • It's A Wonderful Life (1946) & The Family Man (2000)
    Dec 24 2023

In our memories, The Family Man seems like an upside down remake of It's A Wonderful Life and, if you choose to see it that way, it works! But, as Kyle & Jim further explore, not everything is as it appears in The Family Man.

Is It's A Wonderful Life the greatest movie of all-time? If it's not, there are very few contenders for the throne. And, even if The Family Man is not considered in the same pantheon, both of these films together make for terrific family holiday viewing - that's how we viewed them together for years.
