Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese poet, philosopher, artist, and writer, a genius of his age. His writing was revolutionary for his time. Rebellious Spirits is a collection of short stories that shake listeners out from the slumber of tradition and customs and incite them to rebellion against societal norms and earthly laws. A Tear and a Smile is a collection of parables, poems, and short stories from the Lebanese writer and poet Khalil Gibran. Gibran immigrated to the United States with his family as a young man. He is renowned for his poetry in both Arabic and English.

An early-20th-century Lebanese-American writer, Khalil Gibran instilled his poetry and art with his experiences in both the East and West. This selection of quotes, maxims, and aphorisms is drawn from such poems as "Secrets of the Heart", "Spirits Rebellious", and "Broken Wings", as well as from his autobiography and essays.
