London 1889. Nach der Aufführung von "Macbeth" wird eine mit Blut geschriebene Botschaft aufgefunden: In Edinburgh, der nächsten Station der berühmten Theatertruppe, soll jemand grausam zu Tode kommen. Der Fall ruft die Inspectors Ian Frey und Adolphus McGray auf den Plan. Während der vernünftige Engländer Frey die düstere Ankündigung für reine Publicity hält, ist McGray von einem übernatürlichen Phänomen überzeugt, da Besucher eine "Todesfee" vor dem Theater gesehen haben wollen.

Edinburgh 1890. Inspector McGray ertappt zwei Grabräuber auf dem Friedhof, und beim Anblick der Leiche gefriert ihm das Blut in den Adern. Der Toten wurde das Zeichen des Teufels ins Gesicht gebrannt. Dasselbe Zeichen taucht kurz darauf in Edinburghs Irrenanstalt auf, mit dem Blut eines getöteten Patienten an die Wand geschmiert. Beschuldigt wird die berüchtigste Insassin des Hauses: McGrays Schwester Amy, die ihre Eltern brutal ermordet haben soll. Verzweifelt wendet sich McGray an einen alten Freund: Ian Frey.

Edinburgh 1889. Frey und McGray haben schon einige ausweglose Situationen erlebt.
