“I’ve chased you across time and space, and you’ve never been able to get away.”

For Adeline Reilly, moving back to Seattle was supposed to be the perfect fresh start. With her flourishing career as an author, and the inheritance of her late grandmother’s gothic mansion, there is nothing to stand in her way.

But Adeline isn’t alone in Parson’s Manor.

It isn’t the angry souls haunting the hallways of her childhood home that Adeline fears–it’s the mysterious break-ins, roses appearing, and threatening messages that somehow sound more like eerie promises.

Adeline has a stalker.

Yet, she quickly discovers she’s not the first person in her family to fall victim to a shadow in pursuit.

Left behind are her great-grandmother’s haunting journals detailing the story of her own phantom, and subsequently, her brutal murder.

Parson’s Manor now holds more than just Adeline’s memories—it houses a grim future that could lead to history repeating itself.

If she doesn’t fall in love with her stalker first.

While not required, it is highly suggested to listen to the novella, Satan's Affair, first.

Loved the book but the background music was sometimes very distracting from the book. Most times it was more of a sweet romance feel than a dark book. Music didn’t match the words being said.

Good

Didn’t think I could love the cat and mouse duet anymore than I already did. It was a whole new experience to enjoy this book. On to Hunting!!!

The cat and mouse duet was my first introduction to the Dark Romance world and I loved it. When this adaptation was released, I was so excited. And then I listened to it and was immediately disappointed and wondered what the heck was happening. What is with the sound? Some voices sound like they are speaking through cups. Music is placed in the strangest places that detracts from the story and performance of the narrators. To be clear, I love the narrators. What I do not love is how a lot of their voices were added to the other sounds. It's hollow, echoy. It is not really enjoyable at all. I appreciate the author attempting to give us something like this for a book that is loved. But this was not a successful execution of it. Sadly.

Performance of narrators 5 stars
Story itself I loved 5 stars
The slicing and connecting of sound and narration - generous - 3 stars.
And sadly that last part heavily affects the overall rating - 3 stars.

What's with the sound?

I read this book like from an actual book and loved it and decided to revisit it with the audio. Maybe it’s just me but I absolutely can’t stand what they tried to do with the sound editing. The voice actors are great, but I hate when someone is conversing how far away and echo-y they sound. More than that though I absolutely can’t stand the action and sexy time music. It’s distracting and sounds cheap, like bad phone music when you’re on hold with the bank. I wish it was just the narrators cause they crush it. Also not a huge fan of the woman who voices all the other female characters because her voice sounds the same for all of them and is too type-cast to be one thing, that it ruins the mental picture of the other characters.

The whole thing feels like some producer wanted to try to make something fancy and engaging, but wasn’t willing to actually put the money into it that would’ve been needed for it to be good. I feel for the people who worked on this.

The sound editing is so distracting and terrible that thats what I’m thinking about instead of sexy stalkers in one of my favorite most engaging fucked up romances. I’m picturing some over worked sound engineer trying to make something good without the resources needed, being told to use the free music bites rather then creating something that could’ve been great and their creative soul dies a little.

A voice actress so unimpressed with the boss telling her to play all these characters but not wanting to pay her her full rate so she just sighs and again her creative soul dies a little, but she won’t sell herself short by giving more then what she is worth for someone so ungrateful.

Love the story, hate the sound editing
